#93: Kiwi Kraze

Released In: 1991
Developer: Taito
Publisher: Taito

Kiwi Kraze is a port of Taito's 1988 arcade game, The New Zealand Story. You play as Tiki, a sneaker-loving kiwi bird and accomplished archer. One day, you're just sitting around minding your own business and the evil Wally Walrus kidnaps all your little kiwi buddies as well as your girlfriend, Phee-Phee, and sells them to zoos all over New Zealand. Luckily, Tiki has a plan. It mainly involves stealing balloons and snorkeling, but it just might be crazy enough to work... if you're willing to pick up the controller and guide him. Are you a bad enough dude to help a small flightless bird kill a walrus?

Syd Lexia: Like most ports of Taito arcade games, Kiwi Kraze is severely lacking when compared to the original game. Luckily, The New Zealand Story was rather unknown in the United States, so I didn't know what I was missing out on.

Dr. Jeebus: I may have had no idea what a kiwi was when I played this game, but I was still pretty damn happy with it. As I recall, one hit killed you in this game, which proved to be a real bitch when it came time to fight the bosses. But the game was so full of warps and secrets that I had to keep playing it... compulsively.
