#60: Double Dragon II: The Revenge

Released In: 1990
Developer: Technos
Publisher: Acclaim

The Black Shadow Warriors have taken over the city and KILLED Billy Lee's girlfriend Marian. Play as brothers Billy and Jimmy and take revenge on the Black Shadow organization and save the city. This time, it's personal.

Syd Lexia: Favorite part: the level inside the chopper. Is there anything more entertaining than watching Abobo get sucked out the chopper door into oblivion? Least favorite part: the disappearing platforms in the Mansion of Terror. This part would be an absolute joke if the Lee brothers didn't complete suck at jumping.

DarkMaze: Double Dragon II had a grittier, less cartoony look than its predecessor, which is much to its credit. Since the DD series takes place in a post-apocalyptic urban environment where gangs rule the streets (and just about everyplace else), it really needed that darker feel. I also got a kick out of how the game plays with space. Need to be in a confined helicopter? No problem – they just make the playing space smaller and put lots of black border around it.

Obligatory gripe: I hate the bizarre attack controls. One button for left attacks, and one button for right attacks? No. The B button is for attacking, and A button is for jumping. Don’t screw with that. Thank you.
