You return to your hometown, the Elven castle town of Eolis, after an absence of many years to find it nearly abandoned and in poor repair. You learn that meteorites have fallen to earth and brought The Evil One with them. The Evil One has turned the otherwise peaceful Dwarves into monsters and poisoned the water supply. It is up to you to climb the World Tree, cleanse the water, destroy the Evil One, and restore prosperity to the land.

Syd Lexia: This is a great RPG in the same vein as Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. In a lot of ways, this game is actually quite superior to Zelda II. First of all, it's very atmospheric. The game relies mostly on dark colors, adding an ominous tone to the game. Parts of this game really used to freak me out, particularly the second major area of the game, the part where there's mist everywhere. The music in that section was creepy enough to begin with, and getting attacked by obscured enemies only added to that feeling.

Dr. Jeebus: In Syd's Spring Cleaning Crapstravaganza article, you can see the book of NES passwords and cheat codes that we used to maintain. That thing was our fucking bible back when we used to play this game, since you had to write down those ridiculously long mantras if you wanted to continue your game. Also, I thought that the spell Deluge sounded kinda gay because I didn't know what the word meant.

DarkMaze: It’s a lot more fun than I was expecting, and some of the music is really quite good. Much of the wandering around and talking to folks had a distinctly Zelda II feeling to it, but the familiarity was welcome. I tend to shy away from games that involve lots of wandering around villages and purchasing items – I prefer more straightforward action – but Faxanadu is remarkably engaging.
