So my 360 decided to red-ring today (and to everyone who has to say "That's what you get for buying a 360!", go fuck yourselves) and rather than just go out and buy a new one (which I may very well do if I can't get any straight answers from anyone), I thought I'd try to get it fixed. Two problems though, one the Xbox site and help line have just been running me in circles as to where to send it to be fixed (and now the site is just saying "error" everytime I try to click "New repair") and I never sent in my warranty. Someone told me however that Microsoft recently extended their warranty to all 360s, regardless of when they were purchased, whether you warrantied them, etc. Anybody got answers to either of these queries?

Happened to my friend two weeks ago. He called some 1-800-4MYXBOX number, registered his xbox and they sent him the packing stuff to send it in. 2 weeks later he got a brand new xbox.

Really? I called the number and after taking my information and telling me it was transferring me to a representative, it hung up on me. I'm hoping that's just because it's the weekend and maybe if I call back on Monday, I'll get somebody.

yeah, no one likes working weekends. im guilty of hanging up on people but i work in collections so it doesnt matter.

but in answer to your question, yes, MS did extend the warranty on ALL 360's an additional 3 years from their original warranty. this was 1.5 years ago i think.

Microsoft's customer service is horrible. Last time I sent in my 360 I got hung up on twice; once after being put on hold for over an hour. Another time I was put on hold for over an hour and then someone who spoke no English picked up, so I had to hang up.

I hate to say it, but your best bet is to be unruly from the start. And tell them about being hung up on before. Tell them you want free stuff and they'll send you a Microsoft-published game.

Well, since their website gives me errors and the help line hangs up on me, I sent a somewhat angry email to them through their "Trouble-shoot via email" option so maybe somebody will get the point. Either way, I'll call back Monday and unleash my fury.

Have you tried the "Towel" fix?

Turn it on, then while it is still on, wrap it tightly in a towel. Let it sit for an hour or two, then turn it off, unwrap it, and let it cool off overnight. (It will be hot!)

Then try to turn in the next morning and see what it does.

Sounds crazy, but it works. Ask Asmodeous, he's done it.

All it does is re-melt the heatsink paste, though. And it can scorch other components. So, it might not work, it might work for a while, or you might be good for a long while.

If it doesn't work, will Microsoft be able to tell/not repair it then? Probably not, I know, but I gotta be sure before I try.

go to sams, buy a new one. put your old one in the box and return it, tell them it isn't working.tell them you dont want a replacement, you just want your money back. give them the receipt. they'll open it up, make sure everything is there, and refund you.

this wont hurt anyone because they defect it out of their system. claims ships it to microsoft, who refurbs it and resells it.

Well, I'm not quite bold enough to try JEW's method, but I'll try the towel tonight and tell you how it went tomorrow. Wow, that sounds bad out of context.

theres nothing bold about it. half the time the guy checkimg it will know what youre doing and just not give a shit. its not even like its a loss prevention issue, because when tjey ship it out to microsoft, they get the credit for it.

The towel thing can fuck it up really badly. But then again its already dead and i have heard stories of people getting months of use from toweled xboxes. Might as well try it after a weekday call to the xbox line though.

If you do the towell trick, I don't reccomend letting it sit for an hour. I let mine run for 20 minutes. That will get it plenty hot. Then you should be able to get back to playing in about 3 or 4 hours. This is by no means a permenant fix though. I've still gone through 3 of the damn systems. It makes for a nice fix while you wait for your cardboard coffin to arive though....

Well, they're sending me a box for it after I talked to a woman I could barely understand at times on their helpline for a surprisingly short amount of time. Quick question, do they send back your original hard drive, or am I going to have to do everything I've done in every game I've played all over again?

Right, right. They just sent me an email explaining all that. Interesting sidenote: never tried removing my hard drive before today.
