this is why I liked FFVII. you had the story, you had the characters. you could customize magic and make tons of weird combos. you could swap out characters. you could equip characters. good enough for me.

Yes. Four characters should be the min. FF VI and IV FTW!

I was a big fan of Final Fantasy V. You had (mostly) the same four characters for the entire game, but being able to change classes at will and mix and match class abilities was fucking badass.

You could do that in FFX-2, but doesn't make it a classic.

In FFVII, it *would* make getting people's natural HP and MP easier... and it would make stealing Vagyrisk Claws easier...

Let us never EVER speak of FFX-2 again.

FFV, on the other hand, was quite awesome.

FF X-2 was so gay. I saw my old roommate play this, only cause he's a final fantasy fan, but man that was gay.

Too much girl power and a ridiculous story where every character looked like they were dancing when they were standing around.

As a quick aside, there's a third Parasite Eve game (thank God) SquEnix is working on called simply The 3rd Birthday.

The class selection was excellent, and because maxing out a class improved your standard class significantly you never felt like you wasted tech points on the thief for instance, because in the end you knew that maxed out speed, detect secret walls, run, and all the rest would be at your fingertips eventually.

Its not that i needed 4 its just in the 80s 90s that was the norm. I might be wrong but Dragon Quest Phantasy star breath of fire and most other rpgs all had 4 players. but then around 96 or so it went down to 3. i noticed BoF3 and FF7 both went down to 3 around the same time.

And for FF7 or 8 you dont even need 3 characters. Just 2. They really shot themselves in the foot with the super de duper 9999999999999999999999999 x 999 attacks.

Actually, dragon quest had three characters in number 2 and only one in the first game.

Four characters was standardized by DnD 2nd ed, with its fighter, wizard, thief, and cleric. You need the cleric healing, you need the fighter to kill all your enemies, the wizard was your only access to arcane magic, and the thief kept you from dying instantly to the gygax-era traps.

I'm not sure if that was the case with first ed, but first ed sucked hardcore, so who cares.

by dragon quest, i hope you guys mean dragon warrior, cause if i recall correctly, it had 4 characters, the hero + 3 additional ones.

at least in the GBC one it did. I remember having my hero + a party of 3 jesters. man that was hard.

Dragon Warrior was the Americanized name for the Dragon Quest series up until about 2000 or 2001. The name was changed due to some other company holding the copyright for the name Dragon Quest in America.'

Dragon Warrior III, which was the best NES RPG ever, was the only with the four character party. In Dragon Warrior IV, your party size varied in each chapter.

I probably could have inferred that from the other games you mentioned, but you didn't actually say it so I didn't know.
