Nintendo needs a third-person shooter exclusive title and it's high time they used Donkey Kong 64 as framework for it. This game would be amazing. Please read below and discuss what you like and anything you'd add or change.

System: Would be similar to Vanquish. Over-the-shoulder camera, dodge rolling, and Diddy Kong's jetpack as boost slide.

Cover Mechanics: TBA
Underwater Mechanics: TBA

Weapons ~ Guns, Grenades, and Banana Peels~: Guns are different here in that they can fill up the screen with big colorful slower-style projectiles ala Gotcha Force. This looks splendid. The orange-splosion grenades are cool that they can bounce around off walls. The banana peels would function just like they did in Super Mario Strikers.

Melee: Insert all of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong's Super Smash Bros. moves.
DK: (1) Wind-up punch - would knock enemies into other enemies and cause a big boom.
(2) Ground pound - knocks all enemies into air. Here you could backroll slowmo and shoot a rocket killing everything or perform Devil May Cry shoot 'em up enemy juggling with peanut pistols.
(3) Headbutt - massive damage to one boss, or simply used as a medium damaged stun move.
(4) Spinning Kong - would work like Link's hurricane spin in Wind Waker.

Vehicles: Instead of boring Halo flying vehicles and turret guns, we would get Rambi, Enguarde, Squawks, and Squitter. All these animal helpers cover all sorts of terrain.

Terrain: We would have underwater, aerial, jungle, volcano, etc. Most tps have some apocalyptic environment (Gears of War), sci-fi/space (Vanquish), or city level (GTA, Saint's Row, Crackdown) -- this game would get away from that. How about some sweet underwater gunplay levels like in the Prime series.

Man this game is sick.

edit:

Enemy Types & Attributes - TBA -- have to figure out the death animations (do they explode or simply poof vanish)

Stage Objects: (1) Barrels - not sure on how to incorporate this one. Could be used to travel quickly back-and-forth to defend base territory.

Stage Objectives: TBA

DK64 was terrible.

This sounds terrible.

My two cents.

DK64 did suck -- This concept is not to relive the sucky aspects (collect-a-thon model, slow character speed, and mediocre platforming) of the game; it is to insert Donkey Kong into a third-person shooter using the unique weaponry and gear that was in the DK64 universe.

Care to expand on the second sentence?

The only DK games that ever worked out were the Jump and Run games.

I think a lot of the fans of the DK series would be pissed over such dramatic changes. But it would be nice to see someone take a chance and try something crazy. Hell, look at the first Katamari game, I can't believe it was able to reach store shelves.

I hope that this doesn't include Diddy Kong Racing in that statement. Because you would be wrong.

Well mostly because third person shooters are terrible when it comes to multiplayer IMO. The games aren't fast enough and the aiming is basically non-existent. You would have to have a lock on effect to your target which would make the competitive aspect of it non-existent. EDIT: Though over the shoulder, mehhh. I've played Gears of War, it plays ok, just ok.

Also that the DK universe doesn't really have enough characters to make it a viable multiplayer game. My beef with DK64 is partly because it introduced all these piece of shit characters like Lanky Kong.

Also comparing DK to Halo almost killed me.

Of course this is all hypotheticals since this will never be made but if this was to be good, in my opinion the game would:

A. Be what you described but a FPS

B. Be a TPS but only single player.

People seem to be able to aim and shoot just fine in Max Payne 3 and Gears of War multi-player. I don't want any auto-aim shit in this game.

The Donkey Kong universe has enough characters to play multi-player. We only need six or eight character selection for 4-player death matches.

Heroes:
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Dixie Kong
Cranky Kong
Funky Kong

Villains:

Mario
Stanley the Bugman
K. Rool
Klump

It would be better to just have it single player. (Remember what happened when fans requested Metroid Prime 2: Echoes have multi-player? Ugh.) But a console multi-player third-person shooter party-game would be of interest for Nintendo to make and shouldn't be that complicated (no headshot for massive damage would make it into this game).

Let's focus on single player stuff: coming up with a list of enemies & their attacks, whether the player should have jumping enabled, how to make the underwater action segments fun, how scoring works, etc.). We can pull a GoldenEye and throw in multi-player at the last second.

Of course not. Diddy Kong Racing was great.

If we're going to talk about Diddy Kong Racing at least incorporate it into the DK third person shooter. That game has few interesting battle items that could be used like the magnets and mines.

Anyhow, I went back to playing DK64 and realized you can't shoot or grenade while underwater. (I remember having fun throwing grenades into that moat in the battle level and wrongly figured the underwater opponent could fight back.) They need to change that for this game. The grenades underwater should have small propellors to move them forward -- they become torpedoes I guess. The guns should function the same but with the projectiles travelling slower. When you go to do a dodge roll your character could still aim and shoot because movement speed is slow enough for that (like an already there slow-motion function). They could have one level where the enemy is firing down at you and throwing grenades for you to dodge, and 3/4 into the level you emerge from the water to kill them.

OR the game could go survival horror with underwater segments and allow only flight mechanisms from creatures. Stilling trying to imagine third-person underwater fleeing with an over-the-shoulder camera set-up.

To be added. I need more time to use my imagination. HOLD ON!!

You can always throw in your ideas of how the cover mechanics should work.

Game needs an unlockable DK mode cheat that makes the characters look even more DKier.

DK64 was awesome! The game was absolutely huge and it's size is still impressive today. Also, there was a shit ton of gameplay variety. Sure, all the collecting can be off putting, but it's still a fantastic game.
