Solution: Type with your hands somewhat elevated so you aren't rubbing your palms all over your touchpad. Problem solved.

You can go into device manager in the control panel and disable the touchpad since the button sounds broken. Just keep a mouse handy or you will be stuck trying to use the keyboard to re-enable the touchpad when you need it again, which is a bit of a pain in the ass.

The placement of those damn things can be annoying because trying to avoid touching them while typing is nearly impossible when they are on a flat surface. It makes it worse when your fingers go numb from the quickly developing carpal tunnel as you try to elevate your wrists over the stupid thing. They should make left and right handed models so it isn't right in the middle damnit!

Yeah I've found that laptops really love to break at random and with no real reason for them to have done so. Right now both the little hooks that hold the lid closed have broken off mine just because I opened it the other day, and the spot to plug in the wall adapter is getting loose which means I'll be buying a new one before long. I think it is just because they tend to get moved around a lot more than desktops, but god damn make them a little more durable.

Stacking computer problems in other people's trouble threads drives me nuts.... please just start a new thread in the future.

As for the trackpad, not turning on and off could be one of several things.

The BIOS may allow it to be controlled. If the BIOS were reset or had a battery issue, it could cause the setting to be altered to "always on" or something like that.

There may be a keyboard combination that turns it on and off at a hardware level.

Windows might be corrupted and needs some basic work to fix the driver.

If you can't find a hardware solution and want to go the software route for a driver:
1. As with just about every Windows problem, make sure the hard drive isn't causing the issue... chkdsk c: /r at a command prompt.
2. Find the manufacturer's website and download the driver then reinstall it. Choose to overwrite the old drive if it is an option
