My laptop recently failed and I need to get some files off of the hard drive. I have a feeling they are still on there but I have been unable to find a way to retrieve them.
I got an error (#10008 Replace Hard Disk 1) and was attempting to reinstall windows before I knew of this failure. Windows will not reinstall, I keep getting a window after the loading screen that says the installation could not be completed, would you like to restart and try again or something like that.
Basically I just need to some files off the hard drive, any help would be appreciated.

The issue I have is that my only working computers are macs. Is there a way to connect my laptop to a mac as an external hd so I can search the laptops and move the files off it?

Ok, you should boot off of the Windows 7 DVD.
Go to the command console.
Have a portable hard drive ready to put the files onto. On the portable drive you can put the portable version of Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds
Run that and you should be all set.

Yeah, that might work if I had a Windows 7 DVD, but I do not. My windows computers never came with any DVDs, as the whole idea(and a stupid fucking one given my situation) was that the Windows installation would be on the hard drive and you wouldn't need the disc.
So, I have no disc too boot off. The OS was Vista, as well, if that matters in any way at this point.

just download a torrent called Tiny7 and burn it to a CD
|

You can use anyone's Windows 7/Vista DVD, if you can't find one, I think you can use the recovery DVD that can be created. Hell, you don't even have to burn it, just put it on a USB drive.

Well, i have the recovery disk on a usb drive as well as the portable version of recuva, but I can't seem to get the recuva running. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

So you boot to the recovery drive and then you need to enter the command prompt.
Most likely you'll be at a system path of X:\Windows\System32 That is the root of the RAM drive that Win PE creates for the recovery drive.
You'll need to navigate to the flash drive root. That will be at something like E: F: G: etc...
Commands you need to navigate the prompt:
To switch drives, type the letter and a colon - Example - E:
To change directories going deeper - CD {Dir Name} - example: From C: to C:\Windows would be cd windows
To change directories going shallower - cd .. - example from C:\Windows to C: would be cd ..
To go to the root of any drive - CD\ - example from C:\Windows\System32 to C: would be CD\
To list all files and directories in a path type DIR
Most likely you need to type the following:
E:
recuva.exe

Okay, I am trying this again right now. I tried it earlier and was able to find my files, but did not have the time to figure out how to get them onto my external hard drive. If I cant figure out how to copy them over, I will post again here unless it is explained here before I come back to ask.

Is your external drive formatted for a PC or a Mac?
If it is HFS or Journaled, it simply won't read on a PC. It must be NTFS, FAT or FAT32.

Just to clarify, when I select the file and then hit the recover button, a window pops up that asks me to select a location for recovery. There are three buttons at the bottom, which are make new folder, ok and cancel. Otherwise it is a blank window.

When i got my computer it asked me to make recovery discs, if they would work?

It sounds like the software can't recognize the drives you have active... even the one it was loaded from. Try putting the Recuva.exe file on the recovery drive itself.
What happens if you try to make a new folder?

I actually did what you just said last night, and it still couldn't recognize the drive. All of the drives show up in the drop down menu for drives I can scan, but won't show up when I try to recover files. When I try to make a new folder, nothing happens. I click on the button and just.. nothing.

I am trying another one of the build now, just to be sure. I did notice that the first build I downloaded did not seem to have as many files as the one I just downloaded, perhaps that might have been part of the problem. I will post when I find out, and if it does not work, then I will go to their forums.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.
I have yet to post to the Recuva forums about that glitch, because I am just not in the mood at this point in time to deal with it anymore. Soon I will get a new PC and then maybe I will give it another shot.
