After a recent windows update, some of my pictures won't work as desktop wallpapers. If I select them, it comes out as a white background. All the images that don't work are PNG files. JPEG, etc all work fine. I've checked to make sure Active Desktop wasn't enabled and it still doesn't work. Help please.

Looks like smaller PNG files work. Larger ones do not.

Are there any other commonalities among the ones that don't work? Do they have transparencies in them? Are they larger then your actual desktop?

I don't know if they have transparencies in them. They are much larger than my desktop. I have a Dell Mini 9 but they worked before the Window's update. I would just "stretch" them to fit.

hmmmm, can you post one of them so i can try it on my computer? Also, can you check your windows update history for which update it was? (You could also try removing that update).

Any of them. If I choose tile it doesn't work. Stretch doesn't work and center doesn't work.
No.

I would create another user account on the computer and test it on that account. If it works, you limit yourself to fixes in the registry for the current user. If it doesn't work, it is a global issue that you need to fix.
This would cut your search for a solution in half. Report back.

Also, just so you know: You can open Windows Update by clicking the applet's shortcut on XP's Start menu, or assign the shortcut a key combination to open it from your keyboard . From there you can get to your history by selecting the Review Update History option on the left.

It is definitely a user setting then. The unique settings in the profile are what are hurting you. This means hkey_current_user registry keys, group policy User Settings, or %appdata% files are holding you back. I'll look more into this. What Windows XP Service Pack do you have?

Without access to the system, there isn't much more I can do. You know it is a user profile issue, so you can fix it with the same fix you would use for profile corruption.
Here is that fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151
On the other hand, all image files are converted to BMP as soon as Windows loads them as a background. You might as well just do that step for the system and skip this hassle.

Why's that GP? I've never used one, I usually just reformat, but I've thought about it before.

you know, i've never actually reformatted a hard drive to fix a windows installation. I just install windows onto a different hard drive and use that as the new system drive. Saves all the time backing up data, and guarantees you won't lose anything.

Not all, but most settings that make Windows function correctly are in the registry. Registry cleaners go in there and clean things... but they kinda mix things up sometimes. Just because someone else who made a settings thinks it is correct doesn't mean that they are always right. These things can default settings that need to be changed in order to function. Especially if those settings were adjusted by Microsoft.
