Is the Wii actually bound for greatness, or is it just a gimmicky get-rich-quick scheme for Nintendo?
In my opinion, the Wii seems to be potential going to waste. If Nintendo had their finger anywhere near the pulse of what the fuck real gamers wanted, the first titles on the VC would have been awesome third party shit like Chrono Trigger and Perfect Dark, and some solid first party titles such as Super Metroid. Who cares about TG-16, you could play better versions of everything it had on Sega CD, in arcades, or on SNES. So it had one good pinball game, awesome.
Another gripe I have with the Wii is when the developers just make a complex movement as a substitute for a button press. If I'm making a goddamn complex movement, it had damn well better translate into the game directly. Yeah, remember that "sword fighting game" that was coming out on the Wii? Everyone talked about it! You could do the moves like this and that and it does what YOU do in the game! Oh, hey, where's that swordfighting game, Nintendo? The big secret is, there never will be a cool 1:1 sword fighting game for the Wii; The Wii is a fucking MOUSE CURSOR, literally, it's a big goddamn mouse cursor that you wave around stupidly. GOOD JOB IDIOTS.
It's depressing to see a company with such great potential go to waste, especially when other platforms are just acting like shitty, gimped PC's. Nintendo had the creativity and vision at one point to single handedly bring about the first gaming renaissance, practically.
I'm gonna go kill myself now, I just solved my own goddamn conspiracy theory. Good night, America.

Give the Wii a year and thing'll start to pick up. Almost every console has a fairly shitty first year. Look at XBox, the 360, the PS2, or really any system that emerged after the 16-bit era ended. A console's first year is usually marked by a few major releases that don't come soon enough and then a whole lot of nothing. By this time next year, there should be some great games to play.
And the system is still going strong. Sales figures for February show the Wii outselling the 360 and the PS3 combined despite system shortages. It still doesn't have the 5.1 million consoles in U.S. homes that 360 does, but it's getting there.

The Wii wasn't meant to please "true gamers". It was meant for a wider market.
Lord, this is the EXACT same crap coming from 4Kids haters. They're not trying to deliberately piss you off. They simply don't want to rely on the smaller percentage of people to stay in business, and that is understandable.

That is not art, or entertainment. That's "making money". I suppose that is the central failing of all modern consoles AND mainstream PC games. It's all about money, not quality anymore.
The two prime examples I use for why money doesn't have to have a thing to do with game quality are freeware PC games and mods. Those are both free and made strictly for fun. Or, hell, maybe they're a resume to get hired of a real programming team. Either way, the word "business" doesn't factor into them, and they're fun.
In a time when "true gamers" need a bone tossed their way more than ever, we're getting something to appeal to a "wider market" of gamers? We're getting watered down bullshit to make sales? Maybe if more "hardcore" games were coming out, there would be more "hardcore gamers" to play and buy them...?
I mean, why is it me and Mr.Bomberman can fire up a game of Jackal, and have more fun than I've had in the last 4 years playing any bland PC or console game?

You can't do a 1:1 sword fighting game on -any- console yet.
It would result in the player getting his ass handed to him by the computer if he wasn't a trained professional swordsman.

I disagree 100% with that. Nintendo's primary objective, first and foremost is making games. Always has been, always will be. Sony and Microsoft are not about making game. Aside from AoE and maybe Minesweeper, neither Sony or Microsoft has produced anything special in terms of games. Sony and Microsoft make hardware and the success of their systems depend entire on their ability to throw massive amounts of money at third party developers and coerce them into exclusive licensing deals. In this area, Nintendo is weak. Nintendo has lagged behind in the hardware department since the early 90s; the company's top executives only decided to release a 16-bit console because market pressures forced them to do so. As a result, Nintendo has been forced to rely on their games to sell the system. This strategy has met with mixed results, with the NES and Gameboy soundly thrashing the technologically superior SMS and Game Gear, but with other systems such as the N64 and Gamecube falling incredibly short of anything could be construed as victory. Don't let the trendy success and universal appeal of Wii Sports fool you, the VC is a "true gamer" console. and the Metal Slug Anthology is a pretty good indication of that. But nowhere is the Wii's "true gamer" appeal more evident than in the VC. The prices may suck and the release schedule may be slow, but look at some of the games they're releasing: Slaughterhouse, Comix Zone, Contra III... these are not games with wide market appeal; these are games that only attract the most awesome gamers of all.

I've been a hardcore gamer my entire life, and I absolutely love the Wii. Just because it doesn't have 1,000 first person shooters and 1,000 WWII sims doesn't mean it's not meant for us. In fact, there's barely even a reason to release those anymore. I've been sick of FPS for years now because it's all the same shit with different sprites. I want something new and challenging, but most of all something new. Something I haven't done before. And that's what the Wii is meant to do.
I have to agree with Syd on the VC too. I'd say being able to buy Comix Zone or some TG16 dungeon crawl game appeals a lot more to a hardcore gamer than being able to buy Bejeweled (or any of the shitty free MSN games) off of X-Box Arcade.
Is Nintendo trying to make money? Of course they are! They're also trying to give people what they want however, hence the Wii's free focus group channel...I mean poll channel.

yeah, you nintendo guys keep bashing Live arcade, and I'll keep playing castlevania, TMNT, arcade contra, alien homnid HD, and more.
I'd also like to see the wii let you download gmaes (actual games, like def jam and stuff that you have to buy) and try them before going out to the store and throwing down duckets.

Barf, I don't think anyone would argue that's what a hardcore gamer would want. I was always happy with just a few FPS games, as long as they were of high quality and unique. Stuff like Duke Nukem 3d, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Rogue Spear, Quake 1, and Half-Life. Those are the main ones I've always liked.
I too see the potential in the VC though, I just wish the pricing was a little more reasonable. Maybe they should do a "bulk discount" rate, where if you buy a bunch of shit at once you save more.

I have nothing bad to say about Live Arcade. Live Arcade has some awesome stuff on it. I'm not just talking the obvious stuff like SOTN and Doom. There's fucking GAUNTLET on Live Arcade. That's some of the best old school four player fun out there.
And that's a damn good idea with a trial period. You should have the option of something like a 24 or 48 hour trial period with each game so you can see if you like it. The system can tell what games you've already downloaded, I'm sure it could keep track of which games you've trialed as well.

the way the X bos live trial works is, each game has a demo, kind of like those demos that used to come on the PSX demo discs, and you can download it and keep it, but it isn't the full game. that's waht they do for new games coming out for the 360, aslo, every single game that you can purchase on the live arcade has a demo as well.

Speaking of those PSX demo discs, I probably played the demo for armored core against my friends more than I did any other PSX game, let alone the full version of armored core itself.

We can sit here and argue back and forth until the cows come home, but the fact remains: We'll all pick what we want in the end. So, it doesn't really matter.

Tacos are OK, but Quesadillas are where it's at!
Oh, and the Wii is a sorry excuse for physical activity... using some lame assed wii-mote to mimic a golf club, bowling ball or tennis racket... fuck that! If you want a game that mimics sports, Athens 2004 with a DDR pad is the shit!

Actually Konami is working on a DDR for the Wii that supposedly uses hands AND feet.

I hate hands DDR games... like the ones you can play on your PC using the arrows.... I much prefer the DDR mat games! It's funner, more interactive, and definitely a great workout!
