Feeling morally torn over the questionable legality of all those Sega ROMs you've been playing with? Starting June 1st, you'll be able to purchase the first batch of Genesis games coming to Steam and sleep much more soundly at night. At launch, these will include:

* Alterned Beast
* Comic Zone
* Crack Down
* Ecco the Dolphin
* Gain Ground
* Golden Axe
* Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
* Shinobi III
* Sonic 3D Blast
* Space Harrier II
* Vectorman

Pricing will start at $2.99 and go up from there, though Steam didn't say exactly how high it would go. Still, that's not bad considering you'll pay $8 each on the Wii. Other popular Genesis games are rumored to be coming to Steam, however nothing has yet been confirmed.

I think its kinda cool, knowing Steam there will be packs with multiple games on top of the regular pricing.

Well it's not like they have anything to lose re-releasing these games. They don't really need to invest much money into this, and $2.99 is a decent price.
What would be awesome would be HD re-releases. Some of those games were pretty sweet, but frankly, I don't see myself buying them.

If the game were formatted for high resolution but no new textures were created would that suffice?

In other words if you could play on a wide 16:9/16:10 screen at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 without stretching, but you get no new graphics.

How would you resize it without stretching?

Developer would allow for wider pixel resolution. The levels would be wider but the sprites would remain in the correct dimensions. This is done frequently by developers who port games between systems. Alternatively the game could be automatically pillar boxed.

Rather unexciting considering there's been 2 other ports in the last 5 years on top of the XBLA/PSN/VC releases.

Then again, I'm not a PC-Steam user so I'm indifferent either way.

They'd have no choice but to stretch the backgrounds from standard res to 720 or 1080 pixels. They might as well just update the graphics for the HD era

The backgrounds don't need to be stretched, they are tiled, so just show more of them. The sprites would need to be adjusted to zoom with resolution though.

That may work in some cases, but there are some, like Shadow Dancer where some of the backgrounds can't be tiled endlessly, like the first level.
Also the ground-level background areas, if tiled would basically make the bricks etc, look tiny.

You know with the way Sega likes to whore these games out, it makes me wish Capcom and Konami did it with their old games.

A comprehensive Capcom or Konami beat em up collection with online play would be amazing.

I like it as long as they also do the achievements, but since I've got my Genesis Ultimate Collection on my PS3 I'll pass except for Shinobi III and Shadow Dancer...

Yeah, you need to pile in all of those shitty games in the series to realize that Castlevania 64 is the only good one.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
