I like the surprise element that playing time instead of stock adds as well. You're not entirely sure who has won until the guy announces it.

What is the fucking point of SSB without the items? The characters + items + beating the shit out of eachother make the game. Take out items and it's a fighting game that just has the novelty of having characters from different video games in it.

Yea but that starts to really grate on me after playing the game into the ground as I have. I hate the fact you can be whooping up on someone, they keep running away and you never get that kill on them. It can just be so lame.
I can understand your other arguments, but I prefer stock every time regardless (there are so many other options to alter the gameplay, especially in Brawl).

Well, like I said, I like violence, and time puts the emphasis on beating the shit out of everyone. And yeah, people can steal kills from you. That can happen in any good multiplayer game. You're in the middle of a gun fight with someone in an FPS, then some guy snipes you both. Or you get the deathblow on a boss in Diablo 2, and someone else grabs the best item he dropped. These things happen.
The whole point of Melee is that it's just that; a melee. In stock all too often the game splits into two 1 on 1 matches, with players only switching their aggressions when a Bob-Omb is lobbed their direction or when the fighting gets too close together and players switch sparring partners out of convenience. In timed matches, this does not happen. Everyone is looking for KOs, so if decide to go after a particular guy, you are setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. Once someone's damage gets into KO territory, everyone else is going to go after them. In order to succeed in timed matches, you need to simultaneously wage war on all three opponents and to do so in opportunistic fashion.
Timed matches also allow you to take risks. In stock matches, there is the constant threat that anything you attempt to do will horribly backfire and result in you being KO'd, thereby bringing you one step closer to losing. In timed matches, you are free from such worries. No matter how many times you are KO'd, you will respawn. You might dig an insurmountable hole for yourself and render the match unwinnable for yourself, but you will still being fighting right up to the buzzer.

That's one thing I always liked about timed matches, EVERYONE's in throughout the match, nobody has to sit there for several minutes until someone else wins.

I usually play 3 minute 3 stock matches with all items turned on. The only reason I play with that time limit is for recording purposes.

We usually play stock, but with a few house rules...
No star fox character, ever
Refrain from using your best character (for me, it Luigi, for my friends it kirby)
explosive items are usually turned off (if only to limit complaining)
No 1 on 1s
Anything else is far game
But I have to agree timed matches are a lot of fun, especially when you have 4 people and you play on a stage like brinstar or final destination (if only because they are so small and they keep the battle rolling along quickly).

When I get hit by a wandering Bob-omb that comes from out of screen, it drives me fucking insane.

They way we do things here is 5 Minutes, all items on, random map/characters for just messing around. When actually competing, it's pretty much the same only we pick our best character with the last place person of the round choosing who the winner plays as next. Helps to keep things interesting since people can’t keep using their best guy to win and setting the item drop rate to Low makes everyone more likely to try and rip each other’s throats out to get it.
Brawl is more or less the same way only with Smash Balls and Assist Trophies off, although anyone that gets Ike, Meta-Knight or Snake is going to be ganged up on the entire match.
99 Stock, 15 Minutes, Bob-Ombs and Bats only (set on High), any light-weight character, Final Destination is pretty fun too.

I don't mind Assist Trophies. They're basically the same thing as Poke Balls. But I am so fucking done with Smash Balls. I hate that shutting off Smash Balls doesn't disable Pity Smashes.

Final Smashes would be better if they weren't randomly appearing and moving everywhere, and instead usable after someone gets a full "super bar" like Street Fighter, that's my opinion anyway.

Basically, whoever sucks the most in the bout will come into a ring with a built-in Smash Power so they can use it right away.

I’m not sure on how it works but I think they get one after being knocked out for the third or fourth time without doing much damage or KO’ing anyone else. The biggest problem is that a good deal of characters have Final Smashes that seem to go on forever and can rack up enough KO’s to win the match during that time. CPU controlled characters can get them as well, just run a single player brawl and keep knocking it out until it happens.
Any Star Fox character that gets a pity smash is pretty much guaranteed to win the match since the Landmaster can KO opponents even while invincible from respawn by flying them upward and out of the map. Easily one of those good idea, bad execution things.
