Mines is awesome, they carry GBA/GBC/SNES/SEGA games , and they sell CD's from local artist [ that's an under the counter thing]

They still carry retro games? Lucky you! Mine only carries new games. It's the only negative thing I've got for it, though.

Snag those up pronto, no telling how fast some guy with a niche shop will buy them all and starting selling them at what they were worth or more, all the retro games in my city got bought up a few years ago by these guys at this strip mall and now they sell them for what they were worth when they were new if they're obscure crap, and much much higher if it's something popular / rare.

Doesn't GameStop have an industrial buffer to get rid of scratches and fingerprints?

Buffers only do so much. I have seen so many different types of scratches that can ruin a game and have ruined numerous games. Plus if there is any kind of nick or scratch on top of the game you can kiss it goodbye because the game is ruined. I can;t even remember how many times I got burned by that before I realized what was causing it.

The gamecrazy in my town has this uber nice disc cleaner

It removes all but the deepest scratches. I think this cleaner they use repairs the disc somehow. Like fills in the top layer scratches and shrinks the deeper ones.

Either way whenever I get my discs back they are uber clean

Unless they have a magical buffer, buffers do one magical thing Hacker...they buff something. Depending on how deep the scratch is some can be effectively "sanded" off since all the information is on the label on the opposite side of the disc. As long as you don't go crazy and you don't buff a game 10 times it should work.

Douche, I had two options back in comp repair. Either learn about discs or fail.

With discs all the information is stored on a film layer between two plastic layers. The label on the top acts a mirror for sending the laser back

The new games reduce in price because the games sales figures have usually been hit. Kind of like "Greatest Hits". Once it hits a Game Developers target profitability and sales plateau they implement a slight price decrease periodicaly down to bargain status. Obviously the more people that buy your game the more money you make. Now GameStop will get notices well in advance of a price cut that will be implemented, that's when they start trying to sell out of it right along with the time that the price will drop. At which time they purchase another order at the reduced price. In some cases they don't and they have a left over game that is more expensive then its brethren.

And Used games isn't a neccessity, the stores realized on how big of a cash cow used game sales were and boom now we got fingerprinted and scratched games from little Bobby who doesn't know how to put a cd back in its case. :shakes fist:

We really need some kinda GS spreadsheet or something. Given the amount of new stock I see sitting in their drawers, I'm still of the mind that profit on early adopters evens out with losses on remaining initial batch copies being sold on sale. I think the same is true of TRU or Target or wherever, and I know positively that it's true at a mom and pop.

Maybe GS or TRU buys in enough bulk that they can work a deal out with the publishers to send dud titles back or something. It seems that starting with this gen, they're relying on used games to serve as their selection, and some new titles simply dry up. Ridge Racer 6 took me months to find new, and then when I went to rebuy it later, even finding a used one was tough.

But I do believe used games is a necessity for GS. As you said a couple posts back, new games have little markup and consoles are a wash, and there's very little in the way of impulse merchandise at a GS. I don't really consider a strat guide or a peripheral as an impulse, but perhaps they have high markup. Not really sure.

Scratch the top of a PS2 game and then tell me if it works. Then after you scratch it get some reflective material and tape it to your disc. Tell me if it starts to work again. You know what do this with any Disc.

No thanks

I am most likely wrong about the mirror thing but I'm sure I'm right about the film layer

NOT TRUE! A Gamestop in the mall, in my area, experimented by rounding up some of the girl employees and got them all on the same work schedule. So from like 2 p.m. to close there was this hot girl consortium on M-W-F-Sat-Sun. Sales went up tremendously, from what the district manager said however guys just looking at the games would get this stare from their girlfriends the whole time. They broke the Sorority up the next week and one of the hot sales girls came to our store. You know I hardly see ugly women working there. I've seen one but she was blonde and hence ugly to me...

There's two hot girls that work at the GameCrazy by me.

It's nice. One went to a convention as Zoey from L4D, and still wears the hoodie. It's cool.

When you say the "top", do you mean like the side with the label on it? Or the rim? Or just the outside part of the data side?

I only goto two gamestops in my area. One is in a mall and the other is in a plaza. Of both, I goto the plaza one because the employees there don't bullshit me. They don't ask me if I want to trade something in and they have told me that if the game isn't worth trading in or not. I've only traded in two games and both times they were worth five bucks and I used them for other pre-owned games. When I was 16 they never asked me for my age or ID when I bought games like NARC and Wolfenstein 3D for the GBA. When I tried to buy Dead or Alive 2 for my PS2 at Best Buy they asked for my age, Licesne and Parental release to buy the game. It was rated T and they still wanted all that.

I like to own games that are new, but when the price is two high for my taste it's nice to buy a pre-owned game that's at least a few bucks cheaper. If it doesn't work, the one GameStop I goto they will replace it within two weeks, regardless of the corporate HQ say so.

When it comes to the whole "that sucks buy this thing" it depends on the employee and not the company. Same with any store, I had a conversation about X-Box 360 and PS3 at a fucking wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, Game Craze, Game Crazy, FYE and Gamestop. That arguement is pretty much just opinion. It has nothing entirely to do with the store because if you don't have it they can't make any money which applies to every single company in the market.

So in summation, I'm sticking with GameStop to buy Pre-owned, PC games and sometimes new games, Target to buy the shitty clearance games that could be good but I could always get five bucks worth of entertainment, Wal-mart to take a piss in the manager's car and GameCraze to buy my classic games.

Sort of unrelated, but I got a copy of Radiohead's 'The Bends' out of the library and when I put it in my cd player, it skipped. I looked at the disc and while there were no scratches, a little chunk of the label was missing, explaining the skip in the first song.

That's because GS bought out EB games, and now tries to make it look like competition, they even have both stores in my local mall. Hell, their websites are even identical.

Here's my reasons why it sucks.

Gamestop sucks because the sales clerk spends an hour and a half telling you why you should get a certain game instead of the one you were looking for just because he thinks it's better, even though WE all know that the game he's talking about actually sucks.

Also, nearly everytime I walk in, the sales clerk is big enough to fill a flat-bed truck.

Yessir they do. I managed to pick up Tecmo Bowl and Contra after my copies mysteriously dissapeared. I also found R.C. Pro-Am which I recognized from your Top 100 List, and love it.

yup, i've found both golden suns, legend of zelda, the little mermaid and quite a few sega, snes and nes games there.
