I got a box of genesis games from a friend a while back and got all excited because I saw a Road Rash box amidst all the other loose carts. The box later turned out to be empty.

Who made that list Ba'al? Contra: Hard Corps at 3? way ahead of Gunstar Heroes? Contra's difficulty makes it just ok.
The Genesis's sound chip, while inferior to the SNES, could do metal and hard rock music better.
That list fails for not having any of the Thunder Force games. All kick-ass, speedy shooters.
Target Earth was also a cool one (if not fucking super "rip your brain out" hard) and the first in the Assault Suits series, which included Cybernator.
Time for Syd to do a top Genesis games of all time(I wanted to get people in a Genesis mood) lol
60. WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game-WWF RAW was better
47. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 -Unplayably Bad
16. Mortal Kombat II -Sucked on the Genesis
1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles- Agreed for number 2 of all time
also Double Dragon was an almost exact arcade port on the Genesis, little people know that one.

Cool Spot was awesome, it really was. For something so simple and something I ordinarily would not have liked, I played the shit out of that game. Also Knyte, if Rampart is the same sort of Rampart that was on NES and arcades, thank you for pointing it out as I had no idea it was on Genesis at all till now.

I am going to nominate Flying Battery Zone from Sonic and Knuckles as one of the best video game music songs of all time.
It was the summer of 95, Sonic and Knuckles was the shit

One of the biggest problems I've had with the Genesis is that the color palette in a lot of the games seems very limited to the point where most of the games look like they take place between afternoon and night- there's just not much brightness. It's too bad all of the chunky, pasty nostalgia-nerds just focus on the "blast processing" thing, though.
Otherwise, it was my favorite system. Going back and playing both systems, the Genesis' more powerful processor made the games more fun to play due to very little framerate drops (whereas most SNES games were plagued by it). This allows for good arcade ports, great shooters, swift platforming, etc. I always felt that SEGA made a lot of good moves in Japan, whereas the US divisions had really shitty marketing strategies. Ah well, that makes all of their systems cheaper on ebay.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Shame on all of you for not mentioning the Cool Spot game.
I think I've played that game on the SNES before. Is it the game where you have to collect all those little red spots before you can get to the next level?

Actually, I think all of the songs from that game were freaking sweet. In fact, another song I like (which is from Sonic 3) is Hydrocity Act 1:
Also, I like the Guitar Hero video. That is made of win.

You do realize that Sega was, and pretty much always was, a distant third in Japan.

Perhaps, but the Saturn did a hell of a lot better there than it did in the States.
Also, Japan had the most Sega Genesis/Megadrive variants. In fact, here's one that I actually kina want:

I loved the Hydrocity theme, however my favorite had to be the Chemical Plant level.

Actually. . . I can't argue with that. That is the best theme out of any Sonic game.

In response to Ba'al's list:
The first Fatal Fury kind of blows.
Zero Wing = overrated. The only reason why it's even still remembered is because of "All Your Base Are Belong To Us".
World Heroes is pretty mediocre as far as fighters go. On the same console that has all of the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II iterations, in addition to other great fighters, there really isn't any reason to play it.
I will never enjoy Mega Turrican. It's one thing to have the worst hit detection ever, but when a game literally has no hit detection whatsoever...just...no. Not fun.
Art of Fighting...also a mediocre fighter, although somewhat better than World Heroes.
Clayfighter is (and I know I'm probably going to be shot for this), for the most part, terrible. I just never saw what the big deal is, to say the least. It's a hard feeling to explain, but the main characters control like they're stuck in a whole bunch of mud; I had the same problem with Eternal Champions.
Decap Attack is essentially Generic Platformer #9201.
I never saw what the big deal with the first Golden Axe was. Now, the two Genesis sequels are a completely different story...
Toe Jam & Earl...YES. I cannot believe I forgot TJ&E. Shame on Cam.
Good call on Pac-man 2.
I thought the first two Shinobi games were average at best. Ninja Gaiden is clearly superior.
B.O.B is a pretty good platformer, although the SNES version is superior, IMO.
I do like Road Rash, and normally I hate racing games.
The other games I either haven't played, haven't heard of, or the SNES version is superior. Oh, and where the flaming flip is Streets of Rage III?!

DING DING DING *Thunder Force 3 and 4/Lightning Force* DING DING DING
Also, Art of Fighting is very good, provided you've played the Arcade or SNES versions. Genesis version was raped and misses a hell of a lot of features.
Also, best Sonic music ever imo = Sonic 3's final boss and Scrap Brain Zone in the original.
Anyone ever play The Haunting Starring Polterguy? That game was SMOKIN'.
Also, Sega CD gets a free pass on sucking only because you could play Monkey Island on it.

I had and loved both systems, but some of my fondest memories are of sitting in my beanbag chair and playing Road Rash, Streets of Rage 2, Splatterhouse, Greatest Heavyweights and NHL 94 on my Genesis.
I think really it just comes down to which games were your favorites. For me, most of those were Genesis games.

What about the Metropolis theme? I'd post it myself if I had any idea how.
