I agree with you on the psychiatrists thing. I think more blame should be placed on the parents though. It's much easier to throw pills down your kids throat than sit down and maybe help them with their homework right?

Of course, there are some kids who probably needed pills and didn't get them.

pills always felt like a cop out to me.
bla bla bla chemical imbalance. (although chemical imbalance if you are bipolar would require pills imo... but thats about it)
bla bla bla ADD/ADHD. man up and take responsibility.

Man up?
I'm not going to disagree that some people abuse pills and want "easier" children to manage.
But you are dead wrong if you assume that all mental conditions are just people not being "man enough".
Would you tell someone who is short to man up when they can't reach a jar on the top shelf of a cabinet? Of course not. Mental conditions aren't as physically obvious, but they are equally real.
Read up on this shit before you start spewing off crap.

Take it easy GP, he was just generalizing. The point of the argument, which is that parents take the easy way out from dealing with kids acting like kids by giving them pills, is still correct. I'd bet only 5% of the children in this country diagnosed with ADD actually have it.

Not sure but willing to go out on a limb here, he might be speaking for everyone who was misdiagnosed due to all the hype and quickness to prescribe. I know that my school insisted that I was ADHD and needs medication and the Dr was quick to agree, but years later I am medication free and have absolutely no problem paying attention. No offense intended to anyone who actually has conditions and are helped by medication of course.
Also I would tell a midget to man up, but only in jest.

Obviously some people need medication, I never said otherwise. However it is increasingly more common to just go into the doctor to claim pretty much anything about yourself and walk away with pills. When you go into the doctor and say you are depressed, you can walk out with prozac; walk in and say you have back problems and walk out with Oxycontin. Have a learning disability? Ritalin or lorazepam.
What's worse is when a kid walks in with parents and they choose a potentially dangerous psychotropic with side effects that can make the disability they're supposed to medicate much worse.
When I was in first grade my parents thought I either had a severe learning disability and/or was dyslexic. They took me to specialists who then placed me in after school sessions at an extended learning center. They couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then one night I was sitting at home with my parents and I started talking about how I see two of everything. Turns out I had horrible eyesight, and as soon as I got some glasses I had no problems. Now a days they would prescribe medications before any other options are considered because it's cheaper and some HMO's don't even give you a choice.
Edit: Doctors are fiscally encouraged to prescribe medication.
Also, GP want to play some WoW?

Oh man, I remember that cartoon! I have it saved on my comp and was actually considering posting it in the "favorite Calvin and Hobbes" thread (I ended up not wanting to bump a thread that old though.) This one always makes me sad, but I also use it as a kind of 'don't let this happen to you' kind of thing. Good reminder when you get so caught up in adult life that you forget you have imagination. Bill Waterson's really is an insightful guy. I love his stuff.
Muppet, I had an experience kind of like that. For the first five years of school I got sick almost every day, complaining of pain, going to the nurse, throwing up, etc. Doctors told my mom I was everything from socially maladjusted to borderline autistic to downright retarded. What did it turn out to be? Chronic migraines. Diagnosed when one brilliant doctor finally asked the insightful question, "hey kid, does your head ever hurt a lot?"

Muppet, I have a hangover. Reading that was not a pleasent experience.
More relevantly, I went to see my doctor about depression a little while ago. First thing he does is give me a week's supply of Cymbalta. Then he gave me a questionnaire to fill out. I've always had this thing against pills, so I didn't take the Cymbalta. I filled out the questionnaire and took it to him the next week. I guess if you score a 10 or higher out of a possible 63, you have depression. I scored a 45
So yeah, definitely depressed. The doctor gave me another two weeks of Cymbalta, and booked me an appointment at the mental health clinic. A friend of mine who was gung-ho against the pills from the start did some research and read that Cymbalta causes increased thoughts of suicide, definitely something I didn't need. The night before my appointment last week was probably the scariest night in my whole life. I've talked to GP about it, he knows what I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure I hit the lowest point a human being can reach ever.
Next day I talked to the therapist for an hour, and we kinda just sourced out what could be causing my problems. And you know what, I left with a smile on my face. I don't want to say that I was just healed like that, but what she talked about was enough to set my mind back on track and I'm one happy motherfucker right now (hangover aside).
My point is, I was shocked at how fast my doctor handed out pills. But I didn't take them, and (at least for now), I didn't have to.

I'm glad you're feeling a little better, RR. Good to hear.
On another note...let me back up and get something straight here. Tell me if I'm getting anything in this sequence of events wrong:
1. You feel depressed.
2. You go to doctor.
3. Doctor diagnoses serious case of depression.
4. Doctor prescribes pills.
5. Pills that INCREASE the chance of suicide.
6. And he gives these to a SEVERELY DEPRESSED PATIENT.
7. wthf?
Am I missing something here, or what...???

No shit dude. Excellent call on your part. This is gonna be a huge wtf for me for a while. How does something that makes you MORE depressed help a depressed patient?!

Yeah, that's part of the reason I'm against Teh durgs. Because a lot of them have side effects that aren't worth it! Especially that one. I mean, if a side effect is that you'll end your life...I dunno, just doesn't sound like something I should be into ya know?

I just went bald from the stress induced by this comment.
He he he. Just kidding.
A year ago I was on Paxil at 300-350mg.
I had to come off of it because I hit a ceiling on the med. The adverse reactions increase once you go past 300mg and the benefits no longer increase. To clarify, this is for OCD treatment. My Dr. actually had to call the pharmacy to allow this dosage to be prescribed since it is usually used for depression and the ceiling as an anti-depressant is 100mg. In any case, when I came off of it, I got so sick. I had rage, I had stomachaches, headaches, and all sorts of other pains. I felt like screaming all the time.
I couldn't go to work for two weeks.
But, on a positive note, I changed my med to Effexor at a low dosage, and it is actually working well for me so far. I've been stable now for nearly 9 months on this med.

yes, GP. i was generalizing. and i thank cattivo for understanding that and getting my back while i was aff (away from forum)
anyhow, i meant no offense to anyone who does have any illness that requires medication, but i did mean that on some occasions, people are quick to accept medication rather than just working at solving what the root of the problem might be.
in other words, people would rather treat the symptoms than the illness itself.

Shit man, I specifically went into the ADHD Doc to get prescribed Adderall when I was 17 and it worked. Ended up getting 180 Instant Release in the mail every month. The shit's, for the most part, a scam. Ask and ye shall receive. Of course, I don't recommend this, I got severely addicted to them and was emotionally fucked when I made myself get off them for months. heh
