I play DnD. And for my first time DMing, I thought I'd try something fun and different. I am attempting to adapt Link's Awakening (My favorite Zelda game) into a DnD campaign. (3.5 of course)

I've got a good deal of it figured out already except for a few little details. My problem is that I have no idea how they are going to play the instruments at the end of the campaign for the WindFish. Making them all bards are something is ridiculous. And I plan on having this be a 4-5 person campaign so no dual wielding instruments.
Any advice on making this a better game?

...The instruments play themselves, remember?

Well, they play themselves but... I guess I could have enchantments on them to play when the ocarina plays...
Guess I didn't think about that. Seems kinda... GAY though.

Also: Any advice about the monsters and animal villagers?

Monsters are tough, you'll need to custom stat em. Do you have a list? Some stuff simply doesn't work quite right; for example, stalfos regenerate from non bomb damage even though undead can't regenerate, due to not having constitution scores and thus not being capable of taking non-lethal damage.

Animals are awakened animals. Its in the PB. If you need something more anthropormorphic, you can use the savage species book from 3.0 so long as fights don't break out too much.

I'm not sure how this is going to work. Your probably going to need to take a "inspired by" route. Four players alters the single player nature of the game, as well as the fact that corraling DnD players can be so difficult that it should be its own metaphor for a fruitless task.

Ah. Well, I just made up new rules for a new RPG system.

I think it'll work.

*shrugs*

Anyway, the players seem to enjoy the rules. I am going to test run up to the first boss. I'll see how that goes.

Stay away from Savage Species (or at least the anthro "template").
I have to agree that you're going to have to take some liberties, I'm sure some of the puzzles would become much easier if given a Four Swords treatment. Come to think of it, you might want to look into that game for help as well.

For moblins, you could easily just file off the serial numbers and use Orcs, Hobgoblins, or Bugbears, your choice.

I'll look over the bestiary from that game and let you know.

I would be if I had a copy of the game. After all, I love the other Zelda games.

True... But it is a 15 year old zelda game for gameboy. ebay would be your only shot.

I support buying the game. But roms can hold you over until you do.

Fuck, Ky, looks like your sig got pwned.

And Link's Awakening isn't too tough to find. They made a lot of them, and they also made a GBC one. Gamestop might still actually have GBC games (or not. Don't know).

Gah. The GBC one was inferior IMO. Yes you got an extra dungeon and some clothes. You didn't get the Screen Warp. With provides YEARS of replay value onto that.

I don't hate it. I just say I do not think it is as fun of a game. The screen warp adds a lot of fun after the game.

Well, the game is going swimmingly. The players are having a blast, and don't even notice that it is LA. I took several liberties, true. To make Koholint more of a believable village. Added more people, a market, stuff like that.

I can't wait until they head north to the forest!

Just an update for anyone who cared.

One of the nonplayers reading it figured it out. But he's not telling anyone.

Another HINTED at the game by stating the whole thing was just a dream.

But they are just now getting to the tail cave and we are... roughly 400 posts in.

Oh, so this is a play-by-post game? I never cared much for those, mostly an interface/control issue.

Well, seeing as the majority of our players are Scandinavian, it is quite convenient to do it as a PbP.

But since we are all on Skype, we meet there and talk about their turns. Then once they've decided in the group what to do, they post what they want to do.

And there are maybe 8 ours out of the day that I am not online. So I can be reached pretty easily. And all the others are online about9-12 hours a day. So the game does move a lot faster than a lot of other PbP games.

Realated info! It's been over a month of constant playing (fairly constant. On average 4-5 posts a day, which is quite good.) And they are in the Tail Cave and just reached the boss.

The miniboss was quite easy for them. The bard took out his guitar and started playing. He rolled the best possible roll. And played a Rock Ballad. The miniboss stopped. Cried a little bit and left.

A little while earlier, he had rolled the same and played a hardcore awesome song. All the monsters were destroyed and the torches lit up and then shot off fireworks.

This Zelda RPG is full of win.
