For anyone that has never played it, Torment is a RPG for the PC released in 1999, and takes place in the Dungeons and Dragons universe of Planescape. I bought it the year it came out, played a few hours and forgot about it, being much more interested in the pursuit of poon. ( I was 17) Well here it is almost ten years later, and having found the game, in its jewel case in the attic, I played the shit out of it for about 2 straight months and beat it and I can truly consider it one of the greatest games I have ever played. I highly recommend it for any RPG fan, console or PC. It was different than most Dungeons and Dragons licensed games, mostly because it was less combat heavy with more emphasis on story and character development.

! Fun Fact !
Dan Castellana, the voice of Homer Simpson plays the part of Morte, your floating talking skull head sidekick.

Anybody else have a favorite PC RPG?

Hey there,

"What can change the nature of a man?" Nice to see someone else who appreciates Torment. The game kind of gets off to a slow start, but it really starts to pick up once you get into the momentum of things. It's a traditional DnD RPG, that is... well not so traditional. It relies MUCH more on storytelling, character interaction, and dialogue than it does on dungeon crawling and monster slaying (though there is plenty of that as well). There is no armor in the game, no swords, and your character is immortal. A lot of people complain that the game is more like a novel than it is an actual game, but given the uniqueness of the planescape setting, the atmosphere sucks you in and lets you wander with an almost infinite amount of room for discovery (seriously, this game requires many playthroughs to "appreciate." Did you remember to keep the golden sphere until the end of the game?). The factions, the pseudo-philosophy, the eccentric races, and the kickass spell animations (goddamn Mechanus Cannon is awesome) all contribute to the greatness of this game.

But it's really the uniqueness of your follower characters that stand out. Actually, Morte was voiced by Rob Paulsen (the guy who did Pinky on Pinky and the Brain... among MANY other things), Nordom, the crossbow robot was voiced by Dan Castellaneta, and Vhailor was voiced by Keith David, the guy who did Spawn on the HBO series. Sheena Easton also days an amazing job voicing Annah.

Ah well, Planescape Torment is definitely one of my favorite PC RPGs, alongside Fallout 1 & 2 and the Baldur's Gate series.

As I've said. Absolutely fantastic game. I love the reaction I get whenever I mention the smoldering corpse tavern, where a rogue wizard had a portal to the elemental plane of fire opened up inside him to burn forever is put over a grill as the main attraction. And you get him as a partner.

Its really like nothing else.

I love all those Black Isle games, and the only one I have not finished yet is Fallout 2.

Icewind Dale 2 is awesome, but it's extremely combat heavy, with almost no Player Character development (although plenty of interesting NPC's to talk to).

Baldur's Gate 2 is probably my favorite because it's a perfect mixture of combat, story-telling, and making a beefcake character. And it goes on forever, which believe me is a good thing. I think I'm gonna change my avatar now, just thinking about the game.
