Hey there,
"What can change the nature of a man?" Nice to see someone else who appreciates Torment. The game kind of gets off to a slow start, but it really starts to pick up once you get into the momentum of things. It's a traditional DnD RPG, that is... well not so traditional. It relies MUCH more on storytelling, character interaction, and dialogue than it does on dungeon crawling and monster slaying (though there is plenty of that as well). There is no armor in the game, no swords, and your character is immortal. A lot of people complain that the game is more like a novel than it is an actual game, but given the uniqueness of the planescape setting, the atmosphere sucks you in and lets you wander with an almost infinite amount of room for discovery (seriously, this game requires many playthroughs to "appreciate." Did you remember to keep the golden sphere until the end of the game?). The factions, the pseudo-philosophy, the eccentric races, and the kickass spell animations (goddamn Mechanus Cannon is awesome) all contribute to the greatness of this game.
But it's really the uniqueness of your follower characters that stand out. Actually, Morte was voiced by Rob Paulsen (the guy who did Pinky on Pinky and the Brain... among MANY other things), Nordom, the crossbow robot was voiced by Dan Castellaneta, and Vhailor was voiced by Keith David, the guy who did Spawn on the HBO series. Sheena Easton also days an amazing job voicing Annah.
Ah well, Planescape Torment is definitely one of my favorite PC RPGs, alongside Fallout 1 & 2 and the Baldur's Gate series.
