My boss sucks at his job. He is lazy, inefficient, and terrible at ordering product. My hours are getting cut while he is guaranteed his schedule. On the other hand, he has a family and is a pretty nice guy. Should I try and snipe his job or live and let live?

Thanks, Syd. And if the guy sucks at his job then he shouldn't be working it. A more competant person should be put in his place. Maybe just try to get him demoted or something, cause I do feel for his family.

It's only worth doing if you actually get your boss fired. Remember if you fail, you're not still working under the same incompetent boss, but now one that is pissed off at you.

It's also not a good idea to go into this gunning for his job flat out. If you're really the best person for the job, you'll get it when it's vacant.

I would suggest discretely mentioning these flaws to your boss's boss, and anonymously if you can.

Luckily this doesn't apply to my current job, but you pretty much described about two thirds of the bosses that I have had in my lifetime. I say live and let live as long as they aren't an ass. The replacement will probably be just as bad if not worse.

Yeah, I would say this. Maybe Bosses' boss can help remedy the situation so he's not so incompetent. If you're looking for a promotion, I'd say look elsewhere. I mean if he happens to get fired and you happen to get the job okay, but I have a feeling the drama would not be worth it unless everyone you work with agrees with your assessment of him, and would really like to see you take over.

And of course, there is the old saying about the Devil you know...

A couple of things I should clarify, now that I can type on a real keyboard instead of a phone:

1. Our company has both an anonymous tip line and an e-mail service. If I wanted to get him fired, I would complain about him anonymously via e-mail. I would also not send it myself, in case they decided to track the IP; I'd have one of my out of state friends send it.

2. My boss's boss hates him. He has been with the company forever, so he makes a lot of money and really hurts her payroll. She has tried to get him transferred to another location, but other locations can't afford him anymore than we can. As poorly as our store is doing right now, no other store that doesn't already have that position filled is doing any better.

3. If I get him fired, he will not be replaced. My boss's boss only cares about payroll and business is at a point where his position isn't really needed anymore. If he gets fired, I probably won't get his job. If I do, it's only because they can pay me significantly less to do his job since I haven't been with the company for 30 years. More likely, I will simply get his schedule and maybe an extra dollar or two an hour, but not his actual title.

4. In addition to being slower, older, dumber, and more expensive than me, I know of at least one thing he's doing that is against company policy and probably violates health standards as well. I don't know if it's serious enough to get him fired, but it's serious enough to get him in trouble.

The whole seniority thing is bullshit honestly, lazy and incompetent people are still guaranteed their jobs and pay even though they're terrible at what they do.

I have to deal with lazy bastards all the time too, and I often get stuck cleaning up their messes. My hours are pretty shit too and severely inconsistent so I feel your pain.

But yeah, since he's a nice guy and has a family to support, trying to get him just flat-out fired isn't cool. It potentially fucks up a lot of lives and isn't something that I personally would like to be responsible for.

If he was a prick though, then the rules change. Alas.

He absolutely sucks at his job, and is grossly overpaid. On the other hand, he has a family to feed, and he's an okay guy. If you really want his schedule that much, go ahead and do it, but I say at least give his boss's boss a heads-up so he'll actually make an attempt at doing his job well.

What level of lislike are we talking. You say he is unworthy of his job, but has he ever been cruel to you? If he has based his career on cruelty and stepping on those below him to get promoted than I say do what it takes to get him fired. Is he incompetent to the point that he may destroy the company you work for? Again, I say do it for the greater good. Is he just incompetent and fell into a job he can't handle? If so then I say let it be. There are a lot of people in this world in that situation. Perhaps he will grow into the position. If he is honestly that bad than let upper management handle it. There is no need for you to expedite the destruction of his career.

I don't know if cruel is the right word. But he is a compulsive liar. He does whatever the fuck he wants and then lies about why he did it. For example, when he orders poorly, he lies to his boss and says it wasn't his fault and there was a warehouse shortage, because he knows she won't check it. Also, he has had this job for like 20 years. He should know what he's doing by now. He probably does, he just simply doesn't seem to care. He goofs off. It takes him an hour to do paperwork that everyone else does in no more than 15 minutes. And while he's up in the office doing that, other people have to cover his actual work.

If you really want his spot just do a little research and build a nice colorful flow chart that demonstrates there is a certain position that is being run inefficiently that is cross referenced with what you think would be a more cost effective setup. Leave his name off of it and let them draw their own conclusions. That way you look like you're concerned about the bottom line and don't give off the impression that all you're interested in is moving up in rank. (Not to insinuate that you are btw)

Alternatively you could challenge him to a back alley brawl and take the position by force.

Also if you want to have some fun get a printout with all the employees names and circle random ones with a red marker, cross some out, question mark some others. Leave it where everyone will find it.

				Syd,

I think you should focus your energy on something positive rather than negative. You will be happier and you will find more success that way.

It's too bad you don't work on a Klingon battleship Syd, or else this would be a viable option.

The guy sounds bad at his job, and should be fired - plus there's the efficiency aspect with him getting paid too much in the middle of an economic downturn. It sounds like it would be the best for your company, and therefore yourself & the security of your paycheck if he was let go somehow.

You don't need to do anything cutthroat, just anonymously inform your boss when he lies or does something stupid, if at all possible.

I don't see how his family should factor in. He's clearly a shady invalid at least, even though he's "nice" (probably when it's to his advantage). The woman he's with obviously doesn't care or ignores the fact that he's an invalid and bore children with him anyway, and children are made to suffer for their parents' idiocy, so better to get them acquainted with real life sooner than later.

I know sounds a bit cruel and I do overplay it a bit, but if his family takes after him at all, that's not a family I wish to see prosper.
