So what do you like in terms of Megaman? I owned Megaman 3 when I was younger ('till it got stolen... ). I'm gonna have to say it was the best one. Megaman 2 was awesome, of course, but Megaman 3 was even cooler, I think. I mean, the enemy robots were just as cool as in Megaman 2, and then the part where you fight the enemies from Megaman 2 again? So cool! Also, Megaman 4 was alright, but they got a bit stale after that, I thought.
Once when I was little I was 'Magnet Man' for Halloween. It didn't work out that great 'cause no one knew who I was supposed to be.

I have to stand by Mega Man 2 as the best of the Mega Man series... I don't know what it is about that game (it might be the music, Dr Wily's second stage may have the best music in all of video games), but I can play it over and over again. I can't say the same for Mega Man 3. The two games are very similar, but I think the enemies in Mega Man 3 just rub me the wrong way.
In Mega Man 2, you had distinct elemental enemies: Heat Man, Bubble Man; and enemies that had distinct weaknesses: Wood Man was weak against Metal Blade and fire... though there's exceptions, it followed a pretty good pattern. Though using the special weapons to beat the bosses in each level made it a little easy, when you're 8-9 years old, it's fucking cool that you can use fire against a tree robot.
In Mega Man 3, which I admit, I don't even remember that well, some of the enemies didn't have that cool distinct weakness: Gemini Man, though cool, I don't know what the hell you attack twins with. Hard Man... same deal. Though I'm sure they were all weak against some weapon, it didn't have the same balance that part 2 had.
They're both fun, and pretty similar games, but I just like 2 better for replayability, music, and Metal Man. That bitch had a metal blade on his head. That's hardcore.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

Guess I can't argue.

In terms of challenge and game length, I'd probably hafta go with Mega Man 3. I mean come on, you fight each of the MM3 Robot Masters twice and you fight all the MM2 ones too. But when I want a Mega Man game that I have time to play through in one sitting, then it's gotta be Mega Man 2 or the original. The later games are OK, but they're just not quite as fun. I did like how in MM4 they fucked with you and tried to make you think you weren't gonna fight Dr. Wily. I definitely marked out the first time I beat Dr. Cossack only to discover that he wasn't the true end boss.
The Mega Man Power Battles games are pretty fun too.

you know,i've always been pretty fond of the ps "mega man x" series, especially x 6-7. the ones with zero are the best. but,of course, the original,2,and 3 are still the best in my books.

It was such a long time before I actually beat MM3 without using the invincible ghost megaman cheat. When I went back and played all the megaman games on emulator, it took me so long to beat the clay boss in MM1. That bitch was tough.
MM2 was my first MM game, and it still rules, but MM4 had skullman. And you could run around with his shield. Definately useful when jumping over those pits that enemies popped out of, especially when you were young and had no sense of timing.
BTW, gemini man was weak against search snake. Probably some theological reference to Cain and Abel, and the snake finding Cain, and them ending up dead and fathering grendel's mother.

I liked the X series a lot more than the Classic arc. I like the Battle Network series (but I've only played 3 White and 5 Colonel, I have no interest in 4 since you had to play through it 3 times and I'm looking forward to BN 6). I don't have much interest in the Megaman Zero series. Part of it stems from the art style. That Zero just looks...wrong.
Trivia Question: Everybody knows MM3 was the game that introduced the slide ability, and everyone know MM4 is where the charged buster comes from, but which classic game was the first to allow you to revisit cleared levels?

Really? I never played the Patriarch of the serials (is that the pluralization of "series?") but I thought it was 4. I don't count 3's edited levels to fight two MM2 Robot Masters v2.0 apiece.
As a remark about Knight Man's bad design, he is the result of a fan contest, I think Charge Man was too

Yeah, there was a bonus "weapon" in Elecman's level that made platforms. I don't remeber if you actually needed it to beat the game, but it came in handy in Wily's Castle. The weapon wasn't really hidden, but it was behind blocks that you could only break with Elecman's weapon, so you HAD to replay the level to get it.

Mega Man 2 is my favorite of them all because it has Metal Blade, easily my favorite power in the entire series, ever. What could possibly be more useful than 8 directional shooting with unlimited range and rapid fire?
I've always said the only thing Wily had to do to beat Mega Man was just make a robot that flies in above him and shoots straight down at him. He's too crappy to shoot up with his Mega Buster, so it'd be over quick.
Anybody do the second player controller trick for Mega Man 3 to do super high jumps? That was fun.

Mine is Mega Man 3. I rented them all and ended up buying MM6 (I don't remember how. I think it was mainly because I hadn't played it and it was there went I went to buy a game.) I rented MM3 constantly and is the one I'm the most familiar with. I was ticked off when I found out about the whole 2nd controller cheat. I had played the game for years and never heard/found it. >_<
