At least I think. Last night while browsing it whirred louder than it normally does for about ten seconds. It did it again today a bit after I booted it up to Windows. I looked up what could be causing it and found out that it might be my hard drive failing. I remember it doing this before a few times back in the day, but now that it did it two days in a row, it has me worried.
I know I should be backing everything up, but my USB ports don't work and everything on my main drive is easily replaceable. If this thing takes a shit on me during this time, I most likely will have a hell of a time trying to get a new one which is my real worry. I only have a part time job at the moment and it's only paying me for four days of work every paycheck. Unless somehow I could get something new and try and pay it off on a monthly plan....but it would still be tedious to try and do that and buy groceries and pay for gas every two weeks.
In addition, I wouldn't mind knowing what the best manufacturer is for reliable desktops. I've been planning on getting a desktop PC rather than another laptop for a while now for when this thing did die, just wasn't exactly planning on it showing signs already. Oh, and my laptop is an Acer Aspire 5100 that I've had for about three and a half years.

You can replace the bad drive for $63.
You want a good desktop, find someone near you such as a friend who knows how to build PCs and bribe them with beer or something. The best valued PC is the one you build yourself. Also, why pay for a new OS (Which most store bought PCs come with) when you already have one. (You should have a cd-key on a sticker on your Laptop. So if it does die, you can install the OS on a desktop and re-use the key. It should activate just fine.)

On my searches for a new computer (desktop) i heard that Acer are quite a good brand for laptops.
If you are looking for a decent desktop i would get a HP. Though with any computer you would have to fork out a good bit to get a decent one - mine was like £650 which turns out is around $938.85.
The problem i had when i was searching for a new computer is how biased everyone is. You really need to look for yourself on these things which is what i found.
Like theres the main brands: HP, Dell, Packard Bell and Acer. If you google looking for reviews of any of those you will see people who hate them or love them.
Then if you pick a computer and look at it's components you will always see arguments especially with graphics cards. If you buy any computer prebuilt now you will likely a low end graphics card. If you look for opinions about graphics cards you will always see people saying X card is shit get this one when in reality the card could be decent and people are always telling you to get the highest brand. Any if you are a technophobe like myself you won't want to be building a computer or having to install RAM or installing a graphics card/processor despite how easy people say it is.
Now that i have finished that i will give you my recommendations anyway but like i said it's very opinionated and you have to choose a computer based on what you want to use it for and how much you want to pay for it.
In my experience:
If you want to game it's always better to get a desktop (and i presume you do since i saw that you are looking forward to starcraft 2 - it's not that demanding). Laptops are generally not customisable and cannot handle demanding games - this is only if you don't mind playing games on non-high settings, i myself don't mind it.
Computers i have seen problems with are Dells. I've known people to have dells and for them to burn out pretty quickly, my mate had to return 3 of them because they kept messing up. Their customer service i've heard is meant to be pretty bad.
My last computer was a Packard Bell generally it was alright i didn't really have many problems with it and the customer service was decent.
I'm using a HP now and i've had it for nearly a week and there's been no problems at all. - apart from Windows 7 compatibility but that's a different story altogether.
I've also heard that AMD processors are slower than Intel ones.
So basically you need to know what you want, and how much your going to spend. Your best bet is to take lots of opinions into consideration and look up the specs of the computers you want and analyzing if they will be useful for you.
I'm not a computer expert but if you have any questions feel free to ask me and i will see if i can assist.
EDIT: Also what Knyte said: it generally is better to get a computer built to your specs as you can be miles ahead in terms of what is being sold prebuilt in the stores. Though the amounts can add up significantly. I wouldn't build one myself cause i would fuck it up.

I got a Toshiba Satellite laptop a couple of months ago. I forget the model number, but it's got a 500GB HD and 4GB of RAM, I think. It's also got a huge battery. Seriously.....huge. It forces the laptop to be propped up at an angle when you use it (which I think is fine, it creates a better natural angle for typing), and it's supposed to last like 7.5 hours.
Very happy with it so far. I paid about $670 for it, I think.

I build complete desktops for customers starting at $300, let's see you find better through Dell, HP, or the like.

I do know someone who can build a desktop, but I don't know how much they would want and I've heard good things about Toshiba laptops, though they are a bit out of my league so to say in terms of pricing.

I have 2 desktop PC's, one is a bit newer and decked out for games and whatnot, the one I'm typing on right now is from 2005 still runs fine, it's an HP. I've literally had the motherboard get wet while the PC was on and by some miracle not short out(not saying this is the case with all HP's, nor would I do it again just an interesting fluke), my point being that I've had no hardware failures or problems with my HP. Just don't get a Dell, in my experience they have a high probability of crapping out, probably due to where they source out their parts, anything not in their higher price range lines (XPS for example) I've seen shit the bed. Granted I could be way off but that's just what I've seen.

if its your buddy, then you can just give him beer, just dont expect him to be quick about it. he would probably also just want you to buy the pieces for your PC.

Every computer user who knows what that is should have one. I can't count the number of times mine has been there for me.

Indeed. I made one out of an old external USB CD-Rom I bought from Goodwill for 5 dollars. You crack one of those older ones open, and it's just an IDE to USB board. One side has a IDE cable and molex connector, the other has an external power supply connector and USB port.
