Anyone else remember the text-based precursors to MMORPGs?

I played in a couple of MUDs a good while back. Fun stuff.

I tried a MUCK once, but I couldn't figure out what was going on and everyone just kept trying to do me.

If by remember them you mean still play them, then yes! The next-generation MUDs are fantastic. Anyone interested should check out imperian, it is incredible. Unless you guys are too cool.

I've been on a MUCK. It's pretty fun, I suppose, depending on whether you log on when all your friends are on or you log on when there's either no one around or everyone around is a douchebag. It's the same fundamental problem with every sort of online interaction, I guess, the only difference being if said douchebags are sultry night-elves who are actually guys in real life or giant...green...fox things.

I've always wanted to install my own MUCK somewhere. So I could use it for advanced character development and planning novels or something that doesn't sound so pretentious. Unfortunately there are like no resources for that sort of thing anymore, it seems. At least none I could find.

I used to play a Star Wars MUD; I always liked sci-fi themed MUDs better than the fantasy ones. It's really only fun if you can immerse yourself in the game and I'm much more partial to sci-fi than fantasy. I also tried to play the original MUD1, but there was almost never anybody on, which kinda took the MU out of the MUD.

I refuse to play any game based around a platform that sounds like a disease.

They're text-based games or environments with multiple people. They usually have some sort of theme, like fantasy, sci-fi, or furry. Think something like WoW or Second Life, but with text.

MUD = Multi-User Dungeon/Domain
MOO = MUD Object Oriented.
MUCK = Place Where Furries Hang Out And Screw (OK, don't know what it really stands for, but that's an accurate description of most of them)
Also, there is MUSH = Multi-User Shared Habitat.

I remember this fat, repugnant idiot in high school who used to play Mud's. He'd dial in to Telnet, then type a bunch of stupid bullshit that essentially accomplished nothing.

He went on to become a star WoW player with a 2v2 Arena team with a 1700+ ranking! Go fatty!

*cough*
I downloaded Furcadia a few months ago, but I've never gotten around to installing it, let alone trying it out. Too busy with Front Mission 4 and Diablo II with some friends.

There's a furry-themed 'hard' science-fiction MUD. It's called Furscape.

Front Mission 5 is supposedly much better than 4. I loved 4, so I'm kind of pissed that we didn't get 5 in the states.

I like MUCKs, not because of the furry thing, but because it has the funniest name.

"I'm playing in muck!"

...Wait, no, MUD would work too. Dammit. There goes this entire post.

What does MUCK stand for anyway? I'll look it up. ...Multi-User Chat Kingdom? Oh, now that's just silly. I'm so ashamed of myself.
