I am kind of the same way. People tell me that I have selective hearing, because I will hear that someone is talking, but if I am thinking to myself or paying attention to something else, I sometimes do not comprehend what they are saying and most of the time people get pissed off at me for it and say shit like "DAMMIT!! I ALWAYS HAVE TO REPEAT MYSELF TO YOU!!".

In all seriousness, does it sometimes sound like people are mumbling or something, even when everyone else says that they're speaking rather loudly? If it does, I've suffered from the exact same problem since I was about eight. I don't know what it is, but I've always found it hard sometimes to understand what people are saying. It's really quite strange, sometimes I see people's mouths moving but their voices sound muffled like they're in the other room or something.

In fact, I usually watch TV with the close-captioning on because I can understand what people are saying much faster by reading the words rather than hearing them.

EDIT: The thing I've always hated the most about this is that sometimes people get angry/frustrated with me and say that I'm not "paying attention" to them or that I'm not listening to them. I've even gotten in trouble with teachers over it.
