A new model of PlayStation 3 is coming to the USA. It will feature a larger hard drive of between 120GB-160GB in size, and the pack will include the force-feedback enabled DualShock 3.

The 80GB PS3 is being phased out, major USA retail chain Best Buy have already deleted it from their inventory. It's Sony plan to have just two models available, the entry-level 40GB model, and the new high-end model.

Sony see the larger hard drive as a necessary feature for PS3 users who want to take advantage of their movie download service which launches later this year. The DualShock's belated return will also make a welcome return to Western gamers deprived of rumble in their games. It's not clear whether Sony will start bundling the DualShock 3 with the 40GB model.

It's pretty bullshit because its just like taking a shit on the 80gb users when we proudly payed 700$ for it.

I mean I never figured out what the point of all this hard drive space is for gaming systems. I mean the max I would need is like 2 Gigabytes for game saves because I never store music on my systems.Seriously what could even utilize a 160 GB HD?

I'm thinking internet content and downloads are the reasons for the large hard drives.

Many PS3 games have installs aimed at cutting down load times. Some are optional, some are mandatory. Blu Ray spins more slowly than regular DVDs, so the installs are necessary to make PS3 load times more comparable to 360 load times. MGS4 requires a 4.6 GB install.

As someone said to me when I bitched about the iPhone price drop, that's the price you pay for being an early adopter of emergent technology.

No, its for the upcoming movie thing there putting in. There allowing downloadable movies for like 3.00$ per I think. That and probally because of the games being fucking huge with MGS4 probally topping 50gb.

Yeah, it's for the movie thing, but MGS4 does have a 4.6 GB install.

It isn't a full game install. It installs selected optimal data which allows the game to run faster.

Exactly, but the full game size if you put the whole thing all together is around 40-50gb

and Sony as well as microsoft are both planning to have full game installs added to their systems w/future patches.

that way you can have a full copy of SCIV on your console w/out having to worry about the disc.

and yes, it does have a little to do w/the movie download deal, but thats not the only reason obviously.

You'll still have to have the disc in there.

And is it hardware or software backwards compatibility?

That's just the compressed size.

That's how big it is on the Bluray.

That's why it needs to install a core installation, as well as seperate installs for each chapter. Because it has to uncompress the data before it can use it.

It's definitely in Sony's best interest to do so. Right now, their production costs are higher than MS or Nintendo. By sticking with the PS3, Sony's production costs will lessen over time. Their hardware is more powerful than the 360 or Wii, and Blu-Ray discs hold significantly more information, so PS3 will remain viable against the eighth generation consoles. And it will be cheaper too. By 2010, when XBox 720 and Wii 2 are expected to launch, a 40GB PS3 will be somewhere in the $250-300 range with the highend model being probably $100 higher. Microsoft's nextgen will probably launch somewhere in the $400-500 range, while Nintendo will probably launch somewhere in the $350-$450 range, if they intend on using competitive hardware.

So MS and Ninty will launch in 2010 with systems that slightly overpower the PS3. Neither one will risk majorly overpowering it because of hardware costs. PS3 will be at the advantage because it will have an established game library and a lower price point. On top of that, desirable exclusives like Tekken 6 and MGS4 will be Sony Classics or whatever by then, thus allowing new PS3 converts access to great games at low prices. Oh yeah, and PS3 will be the only system that's also a Blu Ray player. Thus, PS3 will last through the end of the eighth generation, somewhere between 2015 and 2017.

The PS2 is still a top seller in many markets. You can buy it for $100 and have access to a 1000+ game library. Look at UK and Asian sales charts. PS2 is still placing in the top 5.

Here's last week's Japan sales chart:
DS Lite - 78,666
PSP - 64,413
Wii - 53,036
PlayStation 3 - 11,393
PlayStation 2 - 10,168
Xbox 360 - 7,358

With these kind of numbers, it's only a matter of time until portables completely trump the consoles. The only drawback to portables as a whole that I can think of, is that you can't play split-screen or if you like playing on a TV(Though I'm not one of those people).
