In the current gen, we've seen a shift from externalized game data to internalized game data. I think this a bad idea. No one wants to see their game data fail with their console, and while console online services have become the primary means of sharing game data, they should not become the sole means. There were interesting possibilities with memory cards. For awhile, some arcade machines had memory cards, allowing you to bring your win/loss record with you, not just from arcade to arcade, but to your home unit as well. And if an industry standard was reached, such as SD cards or USB cards, it would be possible to share custom levels and characters across a multiplatform version of a game.

I really agree with this. I wanted to show Syd my Guitar Hero file last time I went over there, not realizing how unncessarily complicated the process would be.

Really? Keeping in mind that I'm not a big next-gen console player. I had a buddy come over to play CoD4 the other day, and he just brought his 360 Harddrive and wireless internet adapter, and It worked with no trouble whatsoever. Again, my only experience with that sort of thing, I still usually just play ps2 and pc, but it seemed rather easy, and the 360 hd was pretty small, although I do think it's a ripoff that you can buy HD's that are 30x faster at 500gigs for 70 bucks for a pc, but xbox hd's are like 100 for less than 1/10th of the storage space.

Plus, we are finally approaching the stage where portable memory is cheap to buy. I got a 4 gig usb drive for ten, why waste valuable internal space when you could carry it with you, or have a back up?

I remember when two consoles ago everyone I knew couldn't wait for HD's to replace memory cards.

Yeah, memory cards were a lot less complicated. I remeber back in the day, you'd just pop one o' them bad boys into the optional holder and you'd be good to go.

But, its sorta a pain in the ass when you own like 20 memory cards and your trying to find the save for lets go out on random, Resident Evil : Outbreak. It's a bitch so its alot easier to have an interal drive, but memory cards are pretty awesome. If only I could find my other 3 :'( .

Well thats what happens when you rent close to every game at your video game rental store and use adleast 2 saves per game. I use 2 per game just incase I fuck up I can reload and the other one is just the main one I save on.

I think one of the reasons why hard drives are currently more popular is because memory cards don't have enough space. And I think if I can buy a 2GB SD stick at Wal-mart for fifteen bucks, Sony or Microsoft can handle making a bigger memory card.

With SD cards and thumb drives reaching upwards of 2GB at a reasonable price, I agree, external memory devices are a much better idea and probably are less prone to failure than a hard drive packed into a tiny, hot, box.

I miss memory cards too.
I could also take my game stats to any other system and play there, or copy it onto another card(for games like Tekken and Soul Caliber). It was just easier and you always had the data.

The PS3 does just use USB thumb drives for save transfers.
After I played through MGS4 3 times, I decided I didn't want to do it 20x more to unlock everything, so I just downloaded someone else's save from gamfaqs, stuck on a thumb drive, and copied it onto my PS3. Viola!
Now, I have everything.
I just wish x360 would do that as well, cuzz I don't want to have to buy thier $50 512mb memcard to get all my saves off Asmodeous's HardDrive, when I got 2gb usb cards laying around everywhere.

the 360 has a detachable HDD, AND memory cards. I take the time to transfer my saves over to a mem card before travelling, but I have plenty of pals that just bring their HDD with them when we game. it works nearly flawlessly.
I know the wii has an sd slot. how easy it is to transfer stuff I don't know. also, I think the ps3 can use usb flash drives. I don't like how the hdd is internal in the ps3. theoretically you could take it out and travel wit hit, but not without a screwdriver.
there's no reason to go backwards and get rid of internal storage. the 360 has the right idea.

i dont mind the HDD's or the memory cards.
i do not miss the mysteriously erased games from my memory cards (im looking at you GTA 3, GTA VC + GTA SA) for some reason they would not load or just erase. idk if it was my PS2 or just the memory card (although any other game never gave me any issues)
but memory cards afforded easier portability, while the HDD's give us more space. so, we'll see what the next gen brings us.
and i never had any games erased on my HDD's

I always found that the memory cards that held more than the standard 15 blocks on a ps1 fucked up alot. I had a mega memory card that froze up. I couldn't switch pages. I guess that was a downside, but overall, i think a console should have a minimal amount of machinery inside.

you shoudln't switch pages in game. it's the equivalent of yanking a card out and putting a new one in.

Ummm... Wow....
Flash memory IS faster than a hard drive. (At least now it is.)
Why do you think they are now making SSDs? (Solid State Drives)

So laptop companies can charge a ridiculous price for a small amount of storage?
I need a new GameCube memory card. The one I have is the smallest one they made.

Never switched pages anywhere outside of the Memory Card menu. It worked fine, then about after a year or two of use the damn thing throws an error and won't let me switch pages. Those memory cards on steroids are just plain shit in my opinion.

Who made it? I have an extra large Nyko memory card for the Gamecube and I've never had any problems with it. My friend had some third party N64 memory card though, and it fucked up on him constantly.

I think it was Performance. It was the Mega Memory card for the PS1. Their regular memory cards work fine, but the mega mem card eats shit.
