More or less. There are ways to hack spare routers into X360 wireless devices, and there are a few aftermarket adapters, but they cost so close to the Microsoft one, that you might as well just buy M$'s.
Though, I would save yourself about $90, and just buy a CAT5e cable of the length you need and route it to your network.

I have Sneak King and Soul Calibur IV. Since it's backwards compatible, I plan on getting Guilty Gear #Reload and possibly MvC2, even though it's damn expensive.

You can actually download #Reload for $10 from Xbox Live, if you can't find an actual one. An actual copy is around six bucks, though. So if you can find one, I'd go with that.
And if you get live, we can play a round of both games.

Yeah, #Reload is cheap. MvC2 goes for $60 minimum used though, which I believe is due to limited production due to Marvel pulling the license.

So before I could play Soul Calibur, I needed to get the system online for a software update, which I did by running a cable from my 360 to the router.
However, then when I tried to get onto XBox Live, it said I needed another software update, and that wouldn't download. The system performed a connectivity test, and the MTU, whatever that is, failed. Anyone have any idea what that means?

I grabbed MvC2 for PS2 about 4 years ago for $60 used, and now when I see used copies at GameStop they're around $80.
Hmm. I have no idea what the problem is. My first Live account got fucked up by some unknown means and I was having the same problems. Try making another Live account. If you haven't made one yet, I got nothing.

I had the same problem with my 360. It means your network isn't capable of running Xbox live. I took a hammer and gradually increased the amount of pressure applied to my router until I was satisfied that it was dead, then I bought a faster router at Best Buy.
MTU Error:
CAUSE
You experience this behavior if your router or the gateway is incompatible with Xbox LIVE, or if your router or the gateway has an incorrect MTU setting.
This test confirms that the network has sufficient Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU). MTU is a setting on the router or the gateway that can affect network performance. Xbox LIVE requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364. If your console does not pass this test, you cannot sign in to Xbox LIVE.
If you have multiple consoles that are connected by using the same connection, you may cause a failed MTU test. A failed MTU test may also be caused by sharing the connection with your computer.

Well, this means I can't play online. I can hook the system up directly to the modem for limited periods and get DLC, but no online gaming.

Getting online was never a huge priority anyway. It would have been nice to play against Flyin' Jew and Char, but I have never been big into online gaming, aside from a two year flirtation with Team Fortress Classic.

You should get Team Fortress 2 on the PC.

So Syd scored a 360. I would recommend Oblivion. Sure it has its flaws, but it is still amazing. It'll keep you busy for hundreds ofhours. Then, I'd say either GTA IV or Saint's Row. Both great games. Similar style franchises, but they are going in different directions.
