Because then you end up with a population smart enough to realize, "You know, we really shouldn't have cut the defense budget...defending ourselves is kind of important".
We have government for defense in the first place. I'm happy to let them spend away, so long as I don't have to worry about Canadian tanks.

We throw in about half a trillion in defense each year. Why not throw a few billion for schools so we don't have an idiot population that goes "HOORAH BLOW THEM BROWN PEOPLE UP" whenever the president points a finger?

lol you won't see canadians tanks ever.
Our military is a bit of a world wide joke. We'll send a couple lumberjacks on horses armed with the finest axes around, but that's about it, maybe a moose or 2 as well.

Your military is one of the best in the world. It's called "Two oceans, frozen waste, and the US".
Nobody really -can- attack Canada, and the only people Canada can attack...well, probably not a good idea.
And several cars have learned the hard way: never f*ck with a moose.

That is an awesome way to put it.

I'm so bananas I'm showing up to your open casket,
to fill it up with explosive gases,
and close it back,
with a lit match in it,
while I sit back, and just hope it catches.
Blow you to fragments,
laugh,
roll you, and smoke the ashes.

It isn't the testing needed to be done to make sure prescription or otc drugs don't kill that I have the problem with. Saying that misses the entire point. We need regulations to help to make sure we have safe food and drugs, thus the name, but we don't need their beauracratic bullshit. Once more, talk to a clinician, or a researcher, learn why they think that the FDA is hampering things. There are drugs out there that have died, not because they are killer drugs, or even that in Phase I, II, IIa, IIb, III or most times even IV, using the roman numerals for a reason that's the way it's done, but because they have set things up that you can't have drugs passed faster then a time period, or because another drug came out and they compared and liked one over the other because that company funded a study for a research center for them or the NIH, or worse yet, because the understanding of the drug is too much, they feel, and they do not want it to pass. Trust me, if you haven't dealt with any of this, then don't speak on it. I didn't know either till 2 years ago, but both sides are a corrupt as they get. And believe you me, there are treatments that could be out there safely, that due to the bullshit, will never see the light of day.
edit:mjl this was for you, no anger here, but you are having a way narrow view of things

King, we have the FDA for one reason; because of the time when we DIDN'T have it. I'm sure you've read some Upton Sinclair in your time, and I wouldn't presume to tell you how these things work. However, to say that these drug companies are corrupt because the FDA made them that way is something I simply don't buy.
I work in a hospital. I see drug reps every day. If the stuff they do for these doctors isn't graft, I don't know what is. Free food, golf outings, all the stationery your office will ever need, paid trips etc. etc. etc. Granted, this sort of thing isn't as wide-spread as it used to be, but it's still shady. Talk to a clinician who's been hired by a drug company to talk up the benefits of their drug, see if they think everything is on the up and up.
Are there viable treatments that never go to market because of beaurocracy? I'm sure. That's beaurocracy for you. What's the alternative. We've seen just how corrupt these guys will get without regulation. Is that somehow better?

"...Tank stopped."
"What'd we hit?"
"Moose."
"Damn. Well, at least we're eating tonight."
"Nope. Just walked off."
"Friggin...Fire at it!"
"No way. I'm not wasting a shell."
Seriously. I think moose are the toughest creatures on the planet.

Dude, you know what? Prescription drugs take over your mind. And turn you into a zombie. It's true. Just look at it. Red pills and milligrams. They eat you alive. And then you walk, mindless. Are you alive or dead? You'll never know. Prescripion drugs are bad, worse than before.
On a different note, I'm sick of how the Docs will just give you a pill for everything. Can't shit? Here's a pill. Can't sleep? Have another, but this one may cause sleep driving or sleep eating with temporary amnesia. Feeling blue? Take a whole cocktail. Shit too much? ANOTHER PILL YAY!!! Fuck this shit, the only pills i take are vitamins and the occasional advil/tylenol or rarely naproxen.

I agree that Doctors over medicate in general.
It is a shame, because the meds are necessary for some people.
Example: Me
And before giving me a lecture about exercise, eating right, vitamins, therapy, etc... I have done all of it. I have done it seriously and actively. OCD fucking sucks if you have it for real, and thank goodness that meds exist to allow me to live a life that I can enjoy.
I will admit that some of the meds I have tried along the way have been bad, but in the end the ones that have worked have made my quality of life much better.

I was on meds for a while. Antidepressants and ritalin for my depression and ad/hd. I didn't care for the constant side effects like brain zaps and massive crashing. so i quit taking them. I do fine as long as i'm on a vitamin regimen drink lots of water and try to excercise. Effexor is the Devil and so is Ritalin. I hate those two drugs in particular, Lexapro too, but it still wasn't as bad as the Effexor, yeeech.

Doc,
Effexor is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
Ritalin is a stimulant.
Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
The three are all different and shouldn't be confused with each other. Since I have OCD and ADD I found myself at one point on Zoloft (similar to Lexapro) and Ritalin. The problem was that for depression Zoloft is taken in doses up to 100mg. I was at 300mg for OCD. At the same time I was on 20mg of Ritalin.
The combination gave me the ability to truly concentrate, possibly to the peak of my intelligence. But I became severely depressed and an asshole at the same time.
For me, the switch was to a low dose of Effexor. The norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor portion of it was better for me and fixing the depression, while the serotonin reuptake inhibitor portion of it assists me with the OCD. I have temporarily given up on trying to battle ADD at the same time because it just is too much drain.
Either way, I wouldn't categorize drugs all together. They effect each person differently and are used for very different things.

In any case, i understand you need them to function, but for me, well if you've ever experienced brain zaps, well, they suck and that was Effexor for you. Lexapro was nice but made me feel like a zombie. My emotions were in a constant limbo of being "okay." Ritalin, well it helped me focus a great deal for about five hours, then the crash. After a month of taking it every day your body takes a toll. eventually my dose was to be upped but i just quit instead.
For me, i think exercising often gives me the endorphines my brain needs to function properly. Everyone's body is different and maybe you dont experience the side effects or they weigh out in the end. The side effects were enough to steer me away from the stuff. One thing I would have to say is that more R&D should be required before a lot of these drugs are released. Some of the side effects like "may increase risk of suicide" in an antidepressant is just ridiculous.

I think that doctors need to be in better touch with there patients and actually monitor them. So many just offer the meds without the proper evaluation.

Most are just professional drug pushers, don't let the fact they have a tie, a wall full of degrees, and a couch for you to chill on fool you.

Mental health treatment is still in it's infancy. We're still not entirely how the brain works, and yes, different pills can affect people different ways. So, yeah, a lot of times, treatment is little more than, "Well, you have this disorder, let's try this pill combo and see if it works."
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it works for a while and needs to be changed. It's just the nature of the medicine right now.
In nearly any case, "some pill" is better than "no pill".
Some stuff is wildly over diagnosed, though. ADD, for one. Or the new en vogue mental disorder, Asperger's.

ADD is BS alot of the time imo. Of course the kids are running around all hyper and not paying attention, school is boring, and they're all hyped up on sugar and youth, wtf do you expect? No one is allowed to use This tried and true method anymore.
