what's the difference between the different 360 models? I am looking for something that can:

A) play Soul Calibur IV
B) play old XBox games
C) buy stuff off XBox Arcade

Additionally, do I need XBL to buy stuff off the arcade? I am not interested in XBL at all.

Any model that has a hard drive can buy things off XBLA.

You only need a silver (free) account on Live to buy stuff. And also some Microsoft Points. Demos are free, however.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.

Yeah, I know you need to buy points to buy games.

and i think all xboxes are backward compatible. except for the one w/out the HDD (i dont even know if they still make that one)

rumor is, there is supposed to be a price drop on all models, so you might want to wait til then.

and if you want to play games online, you need the gold account, if you only care about buying the XBLA games, then silver should suffice

the Arcade model has no hard drive, right? Ostensibly then, it cannot DL XBLA games or bonus content.

yes you can.

I am a cheapskate and I bought the arcade model. it comes with a 256mb memory card. you can save data to that (including games, profiles, and downloadable content), but you can't fit much obviously. I later went out and bought (stole from work) a 20 gb HDD. it's really worth having anyway.

so my advice is to get the arcade bundle to start out, then buy more controllers, a harddrive, x box live (you need it because you have to paly soul calibur with me and char. you can get thirteen months for fifty bucks and jsut use a celphone headset or buy a used one from gamestop, you cheapass) later, so as to not break the bank all at once.

the thing about needing to buy the harddrive to use the backwards compatability is simply because the system needs to download an update to make the game play properly, again, you can save that data to the memory card that comes with the arcade bundle.

It's more expensive to buy everything that comes with the better model separately if you go the Arcade route so I would stay away from it. The 20GB hard drive is 100 bucks by itself so you might as well just buy the $299 package, or for $50 more you can get the new 60GB model. Also, if you buy the Arcade package, you'll have to buy HD cables seperately. Another minor difference that you may or may not care about is the Arcade unit has a white trim while the Pro's is chrome.

This is true. I Didn't realize that the pro bundle had a price drop. When I bought my system it was $379, and a 60GB model didn't exist to my knowledge.

yeah, if you can find the 20gb model anywhere, you might want to go w/that since its been discontinued. or even the 40gb model. now its just arcade (no HDD) and 60gb or 120gb elite (which is what i bought)

gamestop, bestbuy and frys all still have the 20GB listed on their websites for $299 so I don't think it should be too hard to find one. I think the 40GB is actually the one that was discontinued and replaced by the new 60GB model. Personally I think 20GB is more than you'll ever need. I don't think I've even used half of mine up yet over the 3 years I've had the console.

you can get a refurbed one from gamestop.com for under $200. if you want the thing for just the three reasons above, you might as well save a few bucks.

The only real reason to buy a 360 Elite is if you want a bigger default hard-drive, and HDMI plugs. Otherwise, buy a new regular 360, as the older ones are the ones known to malfunction.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Does anyone think it is odd that you can purchase a 1000GB drive now for about $160 bucks and yet the price difference between 60GB & 120GB on an XBOX is $100.

Not entirely true. Sense the X-box (Original) had a Hard Drive as standard, many games took advantage of it by preloading data on the Hard drive so games wouldn't have to load so much. That's why you have to have a 360 HDD to play them.

Make sure it's a Falcon board. These are the newer ones that fixed alot of the earlier RRoD issues. The easiest way to ID it, is it's the one with a HDMI port on it.

One of the few things that PS3 did right. Just use any 2.5 inch sata Hard Drive you want. Apparently M$ think those plastic cases they put thier HDDs into are worth the $60-$100 markup.

MS & Nintendo both fail at storage.

I dunno man, it seems smart to me. if joe gamer has a 360 and wants a bigger harddrive, he has no choice but to buy a microsoft one, or buy a bundle with a bigger hdd.

if joe gamer wants a ps3, there's no reason to spend the extra cash on the higher capacity bundles when he could jsut pop his own 4934234230-2gb hdd in any one of them.

in the end, sony loses money.

Well, if you want to look at the point of view of how a company can exploit their current customers, sure you are right.

But what about the potential customers who sit back, laugh, and smile as they say fuck it, and then buy nothing.

Not really. There is a far more difference between the 40Gb PS3 and 80GB, then HD space. 80GB also has:

- 4 USB ports instead of 2.
- Flash Card reader
- SACD playback abilities
- Backwards Compatibility
