I liked the Ang Lee movie better. THERE, I FUCKING SAID IT.
I have never been a Hulk fan though. I like the Bruce Banner character, but I just can't relate to him when he's transformed. That makes the action scenes kinda boring; seeing him and Abomination fight doesn't really excite me. It's not nearly as uninteresting for me as seeing Aliens fight Predators (why should I give a fuck about either one?), but I still don't feel involved. Since the Ang Lee movie had more Banner and less Hulk action, it was more to my liking. |
I understand where you're coming from and can't really criticize you for it. Lots of people get disassociated with fantasy/special effects. It depends on the person. It goes for all films. I know people who couldn't get into "Lord of the Rings" because it was too "fantastical", one girl doesn't like "Silence of the Lambs" because Hannibal is evil and gets away at the end (which is a valid point), etc. There's certain disbeliefs movies ask from their audience and not everyone can make them.
My troubles with the Ang Lee film is that it feels too unfocused. He wants to focus on Bruce, but it's like the Hulk is affecting Lee himself. Because there is a degree and demand for Hulk in the film, it unbalances the drama Lee wants to make. That was sort of the problem from day one. Honestly, the "action fight" at the end of "Hulk" shouldn't even be in the film and I think Lee would agree which is why it is rather unspectacular. Even with that in mind, as a drama I find "Hulk" to be more unsympathetic than this new one. It isn't through lack of trying, it's that the drama doesn't work. It feels very jittery and forced. It's a flawed script to begin with and needed more time in preproduction to get everyone (studio, producers, Lee) on the same page. Thus, Hulk's drama doesn't work nor does the action. The new film balances those two out better IMO. But again, the Hulk character is a necessary evil either way, it's just a matter of how you deal with it. There's an interesting parallel in that.
