A friend of mine posted this on another forum that I go to:

http://starbulletin.com/2006/09/13/news/story02.html

I've been a big fan of YouTube (where else can you get the good 80's metal music videos?), but as a member and supporter of the military, I won't visit YouTube again until they remove clips like this.

I don't really want to argue about it, so take it or leave it... I'm just spreading the word.

That's weak. Why can't people upload offensive material that I'd actually enjoy. Like porn.

While I certainly don't like those videos, I've got to side with freedom of speech.

I don't know what youtube's terms are when it comes to what it will allow to be posted, but in general I oppose censorship of any kind.

I don't think that YouTube should be blamed. I think the assholes who post this stuff should be blamed, suied, drafted, and then sent into combat first so they're the ones who get killed.

It's more than just freedom of speech though, there's a privacy issue at stake here. I know I were killed and it were caught on tape, I certainly wouldn't want my death or body being displayed without the consent of my estate.

I completely forgot about the issue of consent. The families of these people shoud be asked to approve, which I doubt they would. Stupid videographers spreading their slanderous crap over the internet.

I hate snuff video shit of all types, this is no exception to the rule. Also, fuck their freedom of speech. Stupid ideas have no right of expression.

No, stupid ideas sometime deserve to be expressed. Extremely offensive and moronic ideas do not, however.

I can understand the consent issue. Indeed it is unfortunate for those people's families (and extremely low of the people making the videos.)

However.......I feel that censorship is kind of an all-or-nothing deal. If you push for censorship of these kinds of videos, someone else is going to protest something they don't like. We'll see religious groups protesting youtube for having Iron Maiden videos available.

I suppose that I look at it this way....

These videos may be distasteful to many people, but, I'm prepared to have a relatively small number of people be upset in order to preserve the freedom of the much larger majority.

It's not that tough though, just look at E-bay, they don't allow you to sell human remains or nazi paraphenalia online. Pretty simple, right? Nobody normal gets effected by the rule and it stops gross / offensive shit from being sold.

I don't think I've boycotted anything in my life. Confused

But, this kinda sounds like boycotting MySpace because there's a group in favor of wife beating.

I think there is a PornTube or something like that. I assume it's people singing power ballads naked.

So Steve Irwin's death will never be seen, right? Cause that'd be like watching Brandon Lee die. Sad

I pretty much agree with Syd on this one. I think life is sacred and something special and to be cherished, and I don't believe in people killing one another, let alone glorifying the death of others. I believe respect should be paid to life and death. Filming someone's death and playing it to complete strangers is offensive and immoral, basically.

I think we have made more headway on the internet censorship issue than the supreme court. Very Happy

I'm with Avian. I just straight out oppose censorship... especially in anime and on the Net.

YouTube is my comic relief for shit like that. And no matter what any of you say, The 1st amendment will be there, and with shit happening today, the words "Offensive" and "Immorality" don't exist no more! So put the fuck up or shut the fuck up!!! So fuck you!

(Yikes! I'm gonna get temp-banned for saying this...Uh oh... )

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there should be laws against that sort of content, nor any penalty for displaying it. But I think that media outlets have an inherent responsibility to police themselves and it upsets me when they don't.

well. death is tragic. murder is wrong, and violence is needless.
but the fact of the matter is,freedom of expression should have no limits. because YOU think something is stupid,or the ideals behind something are jaded and wrong, doesn't make it so. If you really think, the people who shot these videos, the people who killed these americans, see their brethren fall every day due to inner-sect conflict,AND at the hands of the americans. Are not videos showing dead iraqies and bombings shown on news networks? is this really so different?

I am a worthless piece of crap.

Aren't snuff films actually illegal? In the words of South Park:
"I'm all for free speech and freedom of expression and all that gay stuff, but dude...you have sex with children!"
Everything has limits. However, YouTube should not be blamed for allowing it to be posted in the first place as there's no way to police the massive amount of crap being put up there on a daily basis, but once reported it should be taken down.

Media policing itself is a joke and always has been, for the most part. Just look at violence in video games. People have an option whether or not to view or play violent games / movies, etc. I just think it's pointless and sickening. The uh, snuff films, not the video games.

I'll setup a cam into Valdronius' shower if you or anyone else is interested... that'd make YouTube worth adding to favorites!
