A lot of the playgrounds in my area have that rubbery mulch crap all over the place, which is just weird. It's like walking on hard carpet, but outdoors. I've gotten more scrapes and skin burns from tripping on that stuff than I have on good, old-fashioned dirt, so the jerks who want to insist that it's safer can just suck it.

Yeah I've seen that shit too, I prefer the rocks that my playground had, you can't have fun throwing rubber shavings at somebody! Rolling Eyes

Does everyone just skip reading my posts, or did you guys just not notice me first mention this stuff? Mad

Oh, fuck. I just completely overlooked the "rubbery ones" and just saw the regular wood chip remark. Embarrassed In my defense, I was not fully caffeinated before submitting that post. [/lamestexcuseever]

And I know that some parks use loose rubber chips and others just use a sort of blanket of the stuff, so I kind of assumed you were talking about loose wood/rubber.

In Logical Progression, In Which A Joke Was Made:
1. drewbocop mentioned rubber chips
2. I mistakenly (see: dumbassedly) re-mentioned said chips a few posts down
3. Blackout quoted and responded to my rubber-chip post
4. drewbocop proceeded to bring attention to the fact that I reiterated his post
5. ross_rifle113 said he noticed drewbocop's original post
6. Blackout made an inquiry that suggested he was jokingly "not noticing" drewbocop
7. Insert rimshot here.

I shouldn't have said anything. It really wasn't a big deal, I just like to feel like people read what I take the time to write. Bastards.

Carpal Tunnel

I wish I had something cool, but that pretty much looks like my handwriting at this point in my life.

...Ok so it was slightly exaggerated, but still... my handwriting isn't much better.

Because that's what dumb little kids do with their lives after being exposed to far too many episodes of Jackass.

I would argue that Break.com, Youtube, and Ebaum's World have done more to mentally set back our species than Jackass.

Set back? I beg to differ. It gives dumb people stupid things to do to kill themselves there by speeding up natural selection.

Hmm... so you are saying that Youtube IS evolution. Interesting. I think I might actually agree.

You would think that Jackass is helping to kill off the dumb, but Look at the guys, most (aside from preston) are thin and in decent shape. Injuries or not, evolution is causing a mutation there, cause they are like roaches. Take Steve-O, why hasn't that fucker expired yet.

Interesting. Maybe they are being kept alive to perpetuate the notion that doing stupid shit is cool, thereby killing off adolescents before they have a chance to reproduce. They are a necessary tool maybe.

As a side note: I wish Steve-O would die. He is truly a waste of fucking human.

Damn straight. Concrete builds character. Especially when you can write rude things in it when it's wet and have generations of children smash their faces into anatomically-incorrect dicks.

LOL. Very Happy

I knew a guy back in middle school and high school that we all called Buddy (I really wish I knew why he got that nickname). His mother was so, so paranoid that she made him wear dog tags with his name, address, and home phone number on them on a chain around his neck in case he got lost. He was still wearing them in high school. After he got his driver's license. Confused He couldn't do anything, either. Couldn't ride a bike, couldn't play on the monkey bars, couldn't do anything because it was "dangerous." I bet if she could've, his mother would've put him in a plastic bubble and rolled him around the city. Sad Poor kid.

Incidently, he turned gay in high school. Really. He even had the lisp and the walk. And the awesome fashion sense.

Fuck these people, I'm so tired of people gauging the future of a generation based on pain and sickness. So people don't want their kids breaking bones or ripping themselves open on crappy old equipment. That's fine with me, with healthcare the way it is, it probably costs a fortune for an arm cast after the insurance company does their part.

It's like these people who insist that beating the shit out of their children for menial infractions is the only way the kids can possibly develop in this world. My parents spanked me literally twice in my entire childhood, and I did well in school, have worked three jobs without any complaints from my employers, and never got in trouble for worse than making a rude juke in class one time.

You want your kid to grow up right? Teach them how to ask questions and find their own information instead of blindly trusting his corporate and civic masters, spend time with them so they don't have to act out for attention, or let them roam the neighborhood for friends instead of having playdates that only let them have enjoyment based on your time schedule. Sounds a whole lot better than putting them in a situation where they become an injury statistic just so you can look macho.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Nobody's talking about looking macho. The main gist is that a very important piece of development is lost when we wrap kids in foam to protect them from being hurt. The playground issue is a single symptom of a much bigger problem- that parents who hover over their children for their "well being" are robbing them of the opportunity to take care of themselves, solve their own problems, and learn boundaries of acceptable social and personal behavior. And on a much simpler note, in my opinion, old playground equipment was just more fun.

I do agree on your other points though, that parents should do actual parenting, and that nothing replaces a mom's or dad's ability to spend time with their child for the sake of teaching them when to stand up for themselves against dominating, negative social forces. That said, it's all a balance- I fucking hate people who teach their kids that everything is a battleground and that the world has to cater to their interests, their expectations, and their desires. That's how we get 10-year olds with senses of entitlement larger than their parents' collective egos. Sometimes, when it's a matter of little consequence, I think kids (and adults) need to learn how to shut the fuck up and get in line.

This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

Everything I could possibly say about today's parenting can be summed up with this phrase: those stupid leashes that are sold for kids.

If you suck so much that you can't control your kid without a goddamn leash, or if you suck so much that you won't take a couple of seconds out of your oh-so-busy-schedule to spend any time with your kid, then you seriously fail at life. I honestly have no idea what brainiac thought of that product. And I honestly have no idea what state of mind we're in to even consider buying that thing. Apparently, that guy just made a ton of money off a bunch of suckers, because I see those leashes all the time.

Truth.

North or South Jersey Walrus?
