I know you do this site for fun, but why not make a little extra money off of it?

Making money online isn't selling out.

Plus there's no feasible way to put ads on the site and have them be fairly unintrusive without a complete redesign. And on the one hand, part of me likes running the site ad-free. But another part of me would love to make the site profitable so I could quit my job and spend all of my time writing articles and playing video games.
Another issue is that I'd have to figure out Valdronius' cut of any incoming money. Since he's a math major, I'd probably let him to write the algorithm. And since he's smart as hell, he'd probably use complex equations that I'm too lazy to analyze to give himself an 80% cut.
Actually, he's not a prick, so he wouldn't do that.
But figuring out his cut would still be difficult.

Syd,
While I certainly don't speak for everyone, I wouldn't mind a NON-flashing banner ad or side bar ad if it means that you get some profit.
I certainly don't think it makes you a sell-out.
I would hope that the site could at least pay for itself instead of costing you 100-200 bucks a year.

You could add some ads in the forum too. I'm sure you've seen a few that have them on the top and bottoms of the pages. Some other unobstrusive stuff is ads for Gamefly and otehr video game businesses, since you do articles on them anyway they'll seem like they belong there.

i was just kidding about the whole selling out thing.
if he does add an ad or two, the forums and the articles wont change at all, so he wouldnt be a sellout.
now, if he gets some ads from video game companies and they dont allow him to talk crap about games or make him write reviews in a certain fashion, then he would be selling out. basically, if he changes what the website is about to assimilate to whatever the ad people want him to be.

T-Shirts would be an excellent thing to sell over the internet. They're easy to ship, too. Open an ebay store and sell your wares.

You could sell shirts that say "I'm sydlexic"
Or would that be insensitive to dyslexic people?

Syd: go ahead and add some ads. My only request - text-only. Forget about all this flash crap. You can't close some flash ads on browsers other than IE and they are annoying as hell.
T-shirts? I'd totally buy every fucking design. It would be like Pokemon. Maybe by that I'd buy meself the obvious honour of having my own article posted on the website.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.
While you're at it, go check out my band, Her Majesty's Heroines.

I agree. Text ads only. Or rotating banners, those shouldn't get in the way too much if they're in good places.
Check Google, whatever Yahoo uses for theirs, and so on. I'd put them on the forum and not the main site though.

I think the most obvious way to make money from this site is to find vendors, merchants, and websites that specialize in old school gaming, or even rent games out. Commisson Junction has a few vendors I think, there's Gamefly who has a CPA program, Blockbuster or other major rental sites may also have affiliate programs that would be great to use here...
The NES Championships going on would probably have produced a good spike in income from these sources if it were already here

I'd buy a t-shirt if you don't charge as much as a concert T.
