This is sort of a crossover thread, so I thought I'd post it here because I don't see a whole lot of sports game topics. Plus anybody who would care would probably frequent the sports forum. Mods feel free to relocate it to VG's if you wish.
But I just wanted to share what I was doing on Madden. I've got kind of burned out on it. So what I've done to spark my interest a little bit is create a new league. Basically, what I've done is weed out all players with at least a 90 overall rating (eventually I'll do it with everyone over 80). Then I simmed the first year and relocated all of the teams to places like Charlston, Salt Lake City, Richmond, or other places that don't usually have big sports franchises. I'll have to sim another season before the teams acutally relocate. Now I have my own league for lesser players to thrive. Now people that will likely never get any chance in the NFL like Chris Leak, Ken Dorsey, Jared Zabransky, etc, guys who flopped like David Carr, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller (sort of), etc, and guys who are past their prime like Aaron Brooks, Steve McNair, Daunte Culpepper, etc will get to be superstars.
Next, I'll probably go to the last couple of years and get some of the guys that aren't on the '08 update I used. People like Tim Couch.
Since it lets you relocate teams to Canada and Mexico, I think I'll call it the NAFL (North American Football League).

Most likely. Kyle Boller still has a higher overall rating. But I'm gonna switch up the teams so they don't resemble the nfl too closely. I really like Smith, so I'd like him to get a lot of playing time.
I fucked up though. I did all of the roster adjustments after starting my franchise. I didn't realize that it actually took 2 seasons before your teams will be playing in a different town (you can't pull a Baltimore Colts and just leave in the middle of the night). So by the time I got where I wanted to be, there were about 3 teams that were screwed by the salary cap. I couldn't even fill the rosters. So I have to start over. I'm just going to be more careful. I'd adjust rosters before I start, but it takes too long.
I've kind of let my interest in football slip over the last few months. I think I have been so into it that I kind of got burned out. But with pre-season coming soon, I'm getting pumped up again. I think that's why I'm doing this. But I love pre-season. You get to see the guys you normally can't watch play.

I was almost converted to a Baltimore Ravens fan last year when Troy Smith almost won the game against Miami. I said if Troy leads them to victory I will follow Troy from now on. Sadly he lost...

Do you remember Gino Torretta? I think he was on Detroit's roster one season. Anyways, he was a stud in college. He played for the Hurricanes (my favorite college football team). He was awesome. But he didn't get drafted until the seventh round. Then he became a journeyman. He only got to play in one NFL game. He was playing for Seattle. I can't remember who they were playing against. Torretta came in on the last game of the season and threw for a TD on his first pass. They won that game. He never got to play again. I was hoping his performance might make some people take notice and get him some more time. Never happened.

I only really took notice of our back-ups after the Batch/Harrington era. Now I know that Drew Statton better be fucking better then some of the other QB's we passed on. Dan Orlovsky could be solid given the chance. Kitna is not the answer to my prayers unless we get to the playoffs this year.

I'm not sure what the solution is for Detroit's QB situation. I think Kitna is a solid QB. I played well last season. He had a great season in Cincy before getting yanked for Palmer. I just don't think he is good enough to get over the hump. He might not even be good enough the get TO the hump. Not with that team. I think they should probably bite the bullet when in comes to other needs and draft a top QB in the first round of a draft with the intention of them becoming a starter. Guys like Stanton and Orlovsky are only backups at best.
Harrington was a good idea in theory. Hell, I'm not even convinced he is as bad as advertised. He played on a garbage Detroit team, a garbage Miami team, and a garbage Atlanta team. Atlanta should have been been better. But that team was messed up from all of the crap with their coach and their former QB. On top of that you have Leftwich, Harringon, Redmond, and Shockley (injured) all contenders for the job.
If they do draft another starting quality QB, they will have to be more patient with him than they were with Harrington. I know he was there for some time with no real results. But I'm not sure Joe Montana would have got the results that would satisfy the people of Detroit. They either need to build up the team, then get a top talent, or get the guy first and build around him.

Charlie Batch wasn't that bad, he wasn't a scrambler though, Harrington had times where I thought, "Maybe he can play!", but he gets frustrated way to easily. Then in place of putting in Dan Orlovsky we opted to put in J.T. O'Sullivan. He sucks dick. I would have loved to see Brian Brohm in a Lions Jersey hell even Chad Henne. Maybe next Year we can get Todd Boeckman from OSU. Holy shit I derailed this thread.

Its alright. I didn't really expect any responses to the thread. I just posted it because I thought it was neat.
But you're right. Orlovsky>>O'Sullivan. I actually think Batch could still be a capable starter in the right situation (like Jon Kitna I guess). But he isn't a guy that can win you Super Bowls unless its in a Trent Dilfer sort of way.
While everybody was busy riding Matt Ryan's nuts. I was saying that Brian Brohm is going to be the next big thing. Now we'll find out if I was right. Even though he will likely sit behind Rodgers for a while, I think he will still get his chance whether in Green Bay or someplace else.

I did. I can't remember what I called them though. I have to start over for the reasons I listed above. I'll remember to make sure I still give them a team.
If you have any suggestions, you can even pick their team name and colors.

I kind of like Madden, but I really preferred the 2K series, but maybe that's just me. Either way, I loved that EA had to ramp up the series to compete with SEGA, but now that they signed the exclusivity agreement with the NFL a few years back, every Madden kind of feels like a retread. But for some reason, I think 09 is going to be different. I hope so anyway.
