Quote:
Beer Pong, that favorite pastime of college fraternities and illicit high-school parties, won't be appearing on the Nintendo Wii any time soon.

Or, not under that name, anyway. Although a Wii release depicting the popular drinking game was recently awarded a T (for Teen) certificate by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal wasn't impressed, calling the decision -- which would allow 13-year-old children to buy the game -- a mistake.

In response, the game's maker, a Las Vegas-based firm called JV Games Ltd., changed the game's name from "Beer Pong" to "Pong Toss" and will eliminate all other references to alcohol. Meanwhile, ESRB president Patricia Vance defended Beer Pong's rating to the Associated Press, saying that alcohol played a minimal role in the game and no one was shown drinking beer.

Another of the year's upcoming releases, Fallout 3, was just denied an age certificate altogether -- effectively banned, in other words -- in Australia. A Mad Max-style sci-fi role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic representation of the Washington, D.C. area, Fallout 3 is replete with exploding heads, severed limbs, flying eyeballs, and pocket-sized nukes -- although in a tongue-in-cheek style that's not so very different to that featured in lots of horror movies.

Because it's a no-brainer for politicians to score votes with soccer moms and religious people.

By speaking out against videogames, you are:

--Protecting the children
--Opposing violence
--Denouncing an activity that many parents feel takes away from homework time
--Taking a stance that will offer very little resistance. (I don't know of any politicians that actually speak out in FAVOR of games)

And a good chunk of the gamers who would be upset by this aren't of voting age, so from a political standpoint you're still going to come out ahead.

I just found the basic picture on Google Images, and played around with Paint, LunaPic, and Tinypic.

But the average gamer is like 33 years old.

The average gamer is NOT 33 years old. That's a Michael Moore statistic if I ever saw one. Unless we're defining people whose sole regular gaming experiences are Wii Fit, Windows Solitaire, or Brain Age as gamers, the average gamer age is probably somewhere around 24-26.

that's not the point. The game was going to suck, yes, but it was also completely harmless and the T rating was justified. The fact that this game, which should have gone unnoticed and unpurchased by gamers, suddenly became a target of coerced censorship is ridiculous.

Regardless of the age/voting status of the average gamer, videogames are still a safe target for politicians. There will be no significant resistance to your position, and you come out looking like you've got innocent children's best interests at heart.

A video game based on drinking game, regardless of whether or not the alcohol references are intact, is just too easy of a target. I don't agree with it, but it's not like we couldn't see this resistance coming. I can already imagine the fuckery that will ensue after that virtual wii stripper pole game comes out...

As far as the average gamer age thing, I looked around and, according to USA Today, the average game buyer age is 36, but obviously that includes parents who buy shit for their kids. The average game player age is actually 29.

Personally, I think this will draw attention that this game wouldn't have got on its own. More people will buy it, causing an even larger sparked interest in beer pong. It won't take much for teenage gamers to figure out that it is based on beer pong even with the changes. The rating is still going to be T. I think the people who complained didn't anticipate that this may work against their intended results.

how does one even determine the average gamer age? Via survey? Data collection for that statistic must be difficult.

I always see little seven year olds playing Mystery Dungeon. In order for the average games age to be 29, there would have to be an equal number of 51 year olds playing Brain Age which I find dubious.

I don't know how you would determine that either. My best guess would be a random survey. But I've never had anyone officially ask me my age and gaming habits. Maybe they compile data from people who actually send in those random survey cards or registration cards you get with games sometimes. Hell I dunno. Whatever it is, I doubt its accurate.

As far as random surveys go, I have rarely had anyone call my home. Most often, these assholes call me at work. In fact, the only ones I can recall at home are political surveys during election time. At work, I'd get all sorts of shit. Nevermind that they shouldn't be (and probably aren't supposed to) call me at work. If this was the case in a gaming survey, A great deal of people they talk to are probably at least working age.

Of course, this is all speculation. But I'm sure that's all the average gamer age is as well.

People just like to blow shit out of preportion and maybe even get famous from it (i'm looking at you, Mr. Thompson!!!)

Anyway . . . a beer pong game was going to be on the wii huh? It's hard to find any adult games on the Nintendo consoles and you would be hard pressed to find some.

Also, Beer Pong . . . jeeze what else is made into a video game these days . . .

Oh my GOD!!! We can't let our children, the future of our civilization, throw simulated ping pong balls into simulated alcohol and then pretend to drink it!!!

Seriously, drinking root beer is closer to drinking than the beer pong game would've been.
