This game is addictive, even though it usually ends up going nowhere for me. Still, not a bad way to kill a handful of hours.

Civ2 fixed that problem by adding in hit points and firepower. Now the phalanx can in theory beat the battleship, but it's very unlikely.
I love my Civ2. Passes the time during boring shifts.

Civ 4 still has issues at times. The combat is based against stats (Offense stat and Defense Stat + modifiers.), but it is still random. So, once in a while my tanks get beat by spearmen.

I haven't played any games in the Civilization series in years. Last time I played was Civ1, and I pretty much took America and laid every nation to waste.

Civilization Revolutions on PS3 is pretty badass. At least the demo is fun.

I hate every Civilization after two.
Test of Time was bullshit. Where the hell was the city screen?
I always played two as Romans. I don't know why.

I love this game. With enough cash, you can simply buy the world.
Unless someone goes Democracy. Then...well, fuck.

I used to play an old DOS version of this game, I have no idea which one it even was. But I used to love it.
If I were to pick one up now, which would be the best to get?

The DOS one was Civ1 for sure.
And my fanboyism dictates me to recommend Civ2 to you and stay the fuck away from the sequels. Maybe except for Alpha Centauri.
Civ3 and 4 are too different for my tastes. They would be awesome games on their own, but not as a Civilization title.

Civ1, huh. It was funny because my computer didn't even have any sounds, so the game was completely silent, but I still loved it.
How old is Civ2? I'd probably have to look for it on Ebay or something.

I like Civ4. It's pretty good if you get the expansions.

I've played all of the Civilizations. I have 2, 3, and 4 (and Test of Time and Call to Power but they both suck) and I emulated 1 on the Amiga. I like 3 and 4, but I still think 2 is the most fun. It's simple enough to pick up and play whenever, but still deep enough to call for some good strategy.
Civilization and SimCity are two series that, for some reason, I hate the first one because it's "missing something", love the second one to death, and then the third and fourth are both too different/too complicated to be truly my favorite.
The city names in Civ2 are too short, though. Character limits stifle my creativity.

Alpha Centauri would definitely be a good buy. I used to have it, and named all my cities evil satanic stuff. Then I got in a huge ass war with the Christian lady. It was fun. Then my Dad erased my file from the computer because he thought it took up too much space.

Agreed, Beyond the Sword is awesome. There's a mod that comes with it, that let's you play through the whole normal tech tree, and then instead of "Future Tech", there is shields for your cities, cyborg units, cloning facility, battlemechs, and more. It's pretty sweet.
