1.) I agree with you. 
2.) Ditto.
3.) I'm not sure why Birdo is in this, but I know that Birdo is called Catherine in Japan.

Apparently, there are a bunch of old NES supporting characters who live in this game. Birdo is one, as is the old man from the original NES Golf game, and many others.
