I think he would've looked cooler in the Crusader-style suit, instead of you know, shirtless and in a hockey mask.

Dude looks like someone who missed the cut for Soul Calibur.
I notice some storyboards for Guile and Chun Li's endings there too.

I don't think anyone would have believed a guy wearing that suit of armor was as fast as he is and able to climb fences and stuff. And it does look like he should have been in Soul Caliber.

Is vega generic because he's a claw guy, or original because he is a combination matador/ninja?
If he had the crusader armor, the last matches would have been against nothing but really burly dudes. Change of pace and all.

You misread. Crusader-style Vega from the blueprint would have been "generic" is what they're trying to say.
Vega (Balrog) is anything but generic. If anything, he's iconic. Everyone ripped off the "speedy guy in claw and mask" concept.

For anyone who played the game for a few years before the movie was around, did anyone else used to argue with friends/brothers about vega being a guy or a girl?In the end battle screen after beating vega, his hair is braided, and so many kids used to think that meant he was a girl. Vega was always my favorite character so I always viciously denied it.

No, we just talked about Vega being gay. I don't think we're too far off Only one of Bison's guys who would go "ewww..." seeing Chun Li
Vega has definitely been ripped off a lot in future games. SF2 was good at using the stages to get their characters identity, especially when, at the time, they had none. Vega's background and stage, the falling fence, the music, his look, it all worked.
...and it all worked over and over again for every SF character.

The debate on Vega's gender ended when someone pointed out he only wore half a shirt.

Many 6-10 year olds in the early 90's.

If I'd known it was going to be difficult for some people to wrap their heads around the idea of young children being confused about a 16 bit character, I wouldn't have brought it up. The idea that he was a girl started from the way he looks in the end battle screen, not during the fight itself. Sometimes kids see one thing and not another. I used to think the sprite from Secret of Mana was a girl, for example. I'm sure everyone had ideas in their head as a little kid that made sense until something changed your mind. Except for everyone who is amazed at the idea of kids thinking Vega is a girl; they're infallible.

I should make it clearer: until someone pointed out the shirt, I thought he was female too.
Dude even screams like a girl.

Gotcha. I never even noticed the shirt, but in the guide to the game they had the biographies for the characters, so it was apparent from that that he was a guy.

I used to think the hair guy from Super Punch-Out was a girl, but then I realized that boobs are what differentiate men from females when shirts aren't on.

You'd think so, but isn't Flea from Chrono Trigger supposed to be a guy:
