You make it sound like a competition.

The dude made a choice for himself. That's why "Good for him". Too many people don't make their own choices, they let others dictate them. If the choice happened to be about choosing chunky peanut butter over something more smooth, then "Good for him" on that too as long as it is the one he wants. |
It's good because he's not doing it for peer pressure, and he isn't becoming an alcoholic.

I agree.
Richo, I know your type. As far as I can tell, your attitude and personality is exactly like one of my good friend's. It's like you cannot accept someone else's comment without having to either point out a technicality or try to 1-up them. You seem to make everything that's said become about you. It gets really old, really fast.
Be a good boy.

You should have worded that possessive in a less grammatically and stylistically awkward way. I know I would have.

Okay, that answers my question. But still, I'd say there's a pretty good percent of hardcore non-drinkers that are so not of their own volition but because of outside pressure in the opposite direction, religious or otherwise.

I'm 18 now, I've been drinking since I was 15, only 'cause my best friend had, and still has connections. I only got really wasted twice, because I have to force myself (I agree with Richo, 99% of alcohols taste nasty.)
It's like, I like being drunk, but I can never get that way.

I've never really understood why people such as yourself take time out of their day to post on messageboards. You constantly make asshole-ish statements. They aren't funny, they're annoying. No one enjoys reading your posts.
What's the point again? Could you clarify that for me please?

In this particular case, it was a chance to make a hilarious fucking joke. I won't bother insulting you by explaining it because you seem to be an intelligent person.
In a more general sense, I like to discuss things. And yes I like semantics.

I'm twenty and I've tasted alcohol, but I've never really drank it. Like a few people have said, it's an acquired taste and I'm just not acquiring it because I don't drink enough and I don't drink enough because I don't have the acquired taste.
I understand the appeal of a beer or some liquor or a glass of wine every now and then, but it's not my thing. What I've never understood though, is when people go out of their way to get drunk. I'll admit, I've never been drunk (because I don't drink, because I don't have the - y'know what I think you got that), but I can't imagine that it's all that great... I'm sure the hangover, from what I've heard of them, cancels out any good parts of the drunkenness...

Beer doesn't even have a taste to me anymore, unless it's skunky, which could signal a problem, but I found that if your take 2 excedrin before you go to bed after drinking I have yet to wake up with a head ache.

I drank a lot of stuff when I was younger. I did it just to get drunk. I never liked the way it tasted. Lots of stuff with too much alcohol. I'd even drink 1492. Then I started drinking beer. Now I really don't even like getting drunk. I like getting a slight buzz, but that's about all. I don't like drinking anything hard now. I do love margaritas. I also like jaegerbombs. but I usually don't drink them. I pretty much just drink beer exclusively. I love the taste of beer. Also, I have a hell of a tolerance for beer. I can drink all night and not get more that a slight buzz and don't have to worry about waking up with a hangover. I love it. But if I ever drink anything hard, I always regret it.

I've only gotten slight buzzes before I couldn't handle the taste any more.

I was depressed and drank far 2 much when i was 14 or 15, chugged almosot half a bottle(big but i dont know how big) and got fucking plastered, i loved the feeling but it only lasted 15 minutes before i fealt like death, i could have been seriously fucked up long term if i hadnt thrown all of it up.
I had a hard time even smelling alcohol after that and i still hate the smell. I've had a drink or 2 since then but have not gotten drunk, or even buzzed from alcohol since. I just don't like the taste, it's not appealing but i may start trying to drink a bit more because I want to have more fun at parties and being sober is tiresome.
I dont care to spend money on alcohol or drugs so i only stuff if it is free.

The last time I got drunk I woke up the next morning, spent an hour by my buddy's toilet 'on the brink', had a shower, a swig of water, left my buddy's place, got to the end of his lawn, and blew chunks everywhere...but I hadn't eaten so it was just water and stomach acid...then I went home, slept, and dry-heaved again.
Yeah I'm done.
Not to mention the fact that my average is a 2-6 a night, which could lead to some issues in a decade or so...

Last time I got sick was a little over a year ago. I wasn't even drunk. I had just ate a bunch of food at McDonalds then went to a buddy's house where they were playing Fuck the Dealer. Needless to say, once I was the dealer, I was indeed fucked. I got bloated real fast and I was getting all of the drinks from the high cards. I went outside, got sick, came back in, finished my drinks, then quit playing.
But since I've pretty much went to strictly beer, I don't get sick anymore.

I never drank because there was never alcohol in my house, and I switched peer groups before the church kids all started getting hammered on the weekends. In my freshman year at University, I got a 6 pack of beer for Superbowl, and traded it to my roommate for his Magic cards.
I don't really have a specific reason not to, I just don't care to start. I'd rather put my money toward other things. And at parties, I get contact drunk, so it's all good. It's also for my future kids sake. If I don't drink, and my wife doesn't drink, they probably won't either.

As a dad, I respect you a lot for that. All of the men in my family are longstanding members of Elk's Lodge. Thank God none of them were drunks. Just beer drinkers. My dad and my uncle drink lots of beer. They never really get drunk though. Like I said, that's how I am. I went through my phase of drinking to get drunk. Now I just drink a lot of beer and don't ever get drunk. I think beer drinking is part of my bloodline. That and I'm of Irish descent. I thought I should help maintain the stereotype.
Besides that, I'm turning into an old man. I'll be 28 next month and I don't feel young anymore. I had my fun when I was younger. Now that I'm older, fun hurts.

ok, now it's time to reveal a big secret...my last name. But for good reason!
Alexander Keith, the Nova Scotia pale ale brewmaster of legend, is an ancestor of mine. I don't know the exact distance, but he's a great-great-ad infinitum uncle, grandfather whatever...so yeah, I do drinking pretty well...it's been rumoured in my close circle of friends that my buddy Geoff and I polished off a 60 between us, and then some on the weekend noted above..

Val,
I hope you have been taking advantage of free soda/juice when going to bars.

I am assuming you mean that you get the entertainment of watching other people act stupid knowing full and well that you will not be the one in jail or the hospital the next day.

Man... I wish this was how life worked. You certainly will not have to be a hypocrite to your children if they ask about drinking and you say they shouldn't. But I think you should safely assume that most children test alcohol at a minimum prior to legal drinking age.
Certainly if they have easy access and see it as an acceptable thing to do, they will be more likely to abuse it, but just because parents don't use it doesn't mean kids won't find a way. Most do.

You're right. But hopefully by limiting the exposure, it'll reduce the chance that they will want to try it or think its acceptable. I have another reason not to drink for the sake of your kids. The reason my mom doesn't drink is because she said if anything ever happened to me, she wanted to be able to be there for me rather than showing up drunk. Because of this, my mom doesn't even drink wine with meals. She worries too much anyways. So even though I'm all growed up, she still is afraid one day something will happen and she wouldn't be able to be there.

beer is an acquired taste. once you get used to the taste, you can start differentiating between what is a good beer and what is not (i.e. dos xx lager is WAY better than corona... actually anything is better than corona's skunky ass)
hard liquor, you just have to try them to find one you like. for example, i like southern comfort, but hennessey is pretty hard for me to drink.
and if you dont like it, you dont like it. you dont have to get preachy about drinking or not drinking. ultimately, what is the big fucking deal?
and i have had amazing times both sober and drunk. and hungover, and drunk the next day. and just binging. sigh
