This isn't your random poll. I was talking with some friends of mine who love to play Guilty Gear a lot how they thought SFII measured as a fighting game (I had it on my mind since seeing on the top 100 SNES games, and have been debating over whether or not to get it for virtual console). One said that he didn't think so because Guile or Chun -Li were broken and were very easy to win a match. He went onto say that, although he may be biased beacuse he and his group of friends play it a lot, that he thought Guilty Gear was the best fighting game, and that it was the best balanced of them all.
Discuss. (and FYI, I have never played Guilty Gear, though I have seen it in action, and as for SFII, I haven't played that in over 10 years)

Only played Guilty Gear a few times. It was alright. The animation and sprite detail is outstanding. Really how I wish fighting games would all look. On that same token, it's really hard to differentiate the different attacks, because they are a wild flailing animations that don't necessarily involve kicks and punches. I suppose this point would be moot if you played a lot and got familiar with each character. Also the one I played had instant kill moves... that is lame.

I've never played any of the Guilty Gear games either, but I know from experience that once you get so good at SF II it becomes the most boring game in the universe. Yep, that's all I got.

Guilty Gear is hardcore F-in' awesome. I love the music and character design, and yes, it is very well balanced.
this site explains the balance thing much better than I could.

I've played a little bit of Guilty Gear. I agree about the attacks not looking like attacks. IT does have some interesting and memorable characters.
I basically a Street Fighter player. Always fun to beat players who think they're "the best".
Guile and Chun Li broken? Hardly. Chun Li is easy to beat. As a Guile player I got to say it takes skill to own with him.. I mean really, it takes me 2 seconds to charge for a special move, if you can't find an opening in 2 seconds why are you playing that character against me?

I have Guilty Gear X on dreamcast. It does look cool, but I never really got into it. I grew up on Street Fighter II so I'm always going to favor it over any other fighting game.

By the time there is an opening, that two-second charge time is up. And it always seemed more like 1 second to me...
Plus, Guile is charging for both his projectile and his anti-air at the same time. You can throw the Sonic Boom and still be ready with a Flash Kick.

True, but you have to do one or the other. Pick which one you want Guile to do and bait him into doing it. Ryu and Ken have a much worse keep away with NO charging in their fireball/dragon punch combo.
It takes a lot of practice and skill to be aggressive with Guile and still managed to keep charging your special moves. Guile is probably one of the more powerful chargers. Blanka would be my #2.

SF2 gave us some of the most recognizable VG characters of all time, but it's kinda slow and a lot of the things we take for granted in modern fighters like aerial attacks and aerial blocking aren't there.
GGXX is an absolutely fantastic game, but it has a much higher learning curve.

Third Strike is infinitely more balanced than any 2d fighter out, end of story. Other than that, I'd say Alpha 2 Gold.
Guilty Gear is definitely no slouch in terms of its technical finesse and depth of gameplay, but its character balance can't hold a candle to Third Strike.

It's kind of unfair to compare Guilty Gear to SFII on a technical basis. SFII more or less launched the fighting genre whereas the first Guilty Gear was released a good 6 years later. If anything, GG should be compared to Alpha 3 or Street Fighter III, which came out around the same time.

Ew, air blocking is fucking stupid and lame. It should never have been in Street Fighter, and any dependency on it is just a lack of skill on your part. I curse Alpha 2 for making me try to fall back on that shit in a panic situation when I play Third Strike.
Air PARRIES, however, are awesome, and are part of what make Third Strike so amazing.

Air Blocking=so now I can turtle while I jump, cause I can't handle openings.
Guilty Gear always seemed busy to me. I prefer II and III of the street fighter to it.

The air blocking I'm familiar with doesn't work that way. You can't air block an attack if the person hitting you is on the ground.

Air blocking isn't always lame. Take for instance MvC... sometimes if your caught up in an air combo, the person may try to finish you off with a super move. Your counter attack will most likely either be too slow or the super move will override it, so airblocking is the best way to avoid losing 1/4 of your life. I agree that it should not be used as a failsafe, but it does come in handy sometimes.

I think SNK are the masters of fighting game balancing. Go play Last Blade 2, or Mark Of The Wolves.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is much better than every fighting game mentioned in this thread, especially those god awful Street Fighter Alpha games.

I think it's apples and oranges.
street fighter palyers have to concentrate more on openings and timing and pacing, whereas guilty gear palyers ahve to concentrate on pressure and chains and loops.
and guile is great. a staple of his gameplay is that you can charge for moves while doign other things. you can land from a jump and do a falsh kick without even going into a ducking animation, or even recover form being hit by blasting out a sonic boom. he also has great range and priority. you can practically punch people out of the air. he gets even deadlier in later games when his advancing moves were added (his knee, for example) so now you can even be charging back while moving forward

Yeah, charge partitioning is pretty brilliant. Just look at a good Urien player on third strike, awesome stuff.

Alpha 2 is better than that trash any day. MvC 2 doesn't have a fucking medium punch or kick, so it instantly sucks ass.

If you like fighting games with no balance or skill requirement, you'd like MvC. Also your avatar is from an anime for 12 year olds with ADHD, I'd take what you say as valuable any day.
Just because you suck at superior fighting games is no reason to judge them harshly. I'd agree with you that compared to Third Strike, Alpha 2 is cookie cutter bullshit. Too bad Alpha 2 is fucking miles ahead of MvC2 in every regard. The fact that there aren't even any medium hits in the goddamn game coupled with the fact that overheads are worthless removes 90% of fighting game skill. No 50/50 mindgame wakeup stuff to do, limited utility for ground combos with normal moves, retardedly high jumping that makes for lame vertical combat, AIR BLOCKING, Turbo 3, the list goes on. The game is trash. Add in some fuck-ugly and disturbing backgrounds, bad music, and horribly pixelated character sprites with limited frames of animation, and you've got one big pile of unenjoyable dogshit.
Also, the game uses graphics from the BORING GAME of Alpha 2, so, yeah. That must make your game boring as well huh
As far as SNK fighters go, the only ones I like are the ones mentioned already, Last Blade 2 and Garou. Garou is visually just nice to look at, and comparable to SFIII in terms of graphics (sadly, not so much in the gameplay department).
That pirate bitch with the huge tits is always my favorite character.

I'm sorry that I'm not on a higher level of consciousness than you and can enjoy things like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Dragon Ball Z. Also, I'd like to point out that I love Street Fighter III. I just can't get into the Alpha games for some reason. the only characters I like are Ken, Dan, Charlie, Fei-Long, and Yun in Upper. Whereas I like Ken, Chun-Li, Alex, Urien, Oro, Dudley, Q, Elena, Yun, and Yang.
I don't know man, I just have weird taste in video games. I don't like Contra III, Link to the Past, and Ocarina of Time either.
