All these crazy difficult SMW mods are fuckin dumb. What's the point if you have to rely on save states every 5 seconds to get through every level. It comes down to memorization over actual skill and that's worthless if you ask me.

Memorization and skill are almost the same thing with these old games, especially these mods. You need memorization for the mario forever mod. You need to know exactly where to jump and land and all that stuff. Anyway, thats what I think, Im not saying you're wrong and sorry if I sounded like an asshole.

Having to memorize part of a level, like say Heatman's disappearing blocks in MM2 is one thing, but when the whole entire game consists of stuff like that, which is exactly what some of these hacks amount to, then I don't really see a point. Anyway, I didn't take offense to what you said so no worries.

Contra games are 80% memory 15% skill and the other 5% is just luck.
Do you deny that statment?
Yeah, games that are retardedly hard are too annoying to play. Good games find a nice balanced difficult.

I'm so bananas I'm showing up to your open casket,
to fill it up with explosive gases,
and close it back,
with a lit match in it,
while I sit back, and just hope it catches.
Blow you to fragments,
laugh,
roll you, and smoke the ashes.

That hack is nice because you don't have to use weird glitches to beat it. Also, it's possible without save states, it just takes a million efforts.

Its because of playing contra so much I memorized all the locations of enemies, where to dodge, where to jump etc. Because I know this now, the game is a piece of cake with no power-ups. So, Im I using skill or memorization?
EDIT: I suppose the more random a game is the more skill that is needed. By random I mean the events that happen in the game arnt the same all the time. Like an enemy spawning at the same spot every time you get up to him isnt random. But a First Person Shooter; if you're playing against another human you need skill to beat him because he isnt generally at the same spot all the time (unless they're camping which obviously means no skill).

The difference is that you might not beat Contra without some memorization, but if your reaction time and gaming intuition are good, you'll make decent progress through the game before you run out of continues even without knowing the game.
With all these bullshit SMB and SMW hacks, that's just not possible. The games are completely unforgiving and they through insanely ridiculous things at you that you can't possible anticipate. There is absolutely no chance to make it through the first few screens of the first level if you don't know exactly what you're supposed to do. And from a gamer's stand point, that's not fun. You're playing a completely linear game where each puzzle has only one solution, and that solution must be executed the exact same way every time. So I guess if you're some giant math or physics nerd, maybe the "impossible" hacks are fun, because they play to your sensibilities. Unfortunately, those sensibilities are shitty and boring, and they do not make for a fun game.

^Well said. I was going to post a similar reply, but I got sidetracked and it slipped my mind. While memorization may help in Contra, there is still lots of room for error, which is non-existent in the ROM hacks.
