UPDATE: Added Nes Multiplayer Cards so people can find other people who are participating in playing NES online. Check below to see.
After several fleeting attempts at trying to find a place where NES gamers play multiplayer over the net using an emulator, the only thing that I found was Kaillera, and no one really plays NES games on it. So I decided to make a topic which people can organise, meet and play online through the use of an emulator capable of doing it. If anyone is interested in playing a NES game with me or someone else, or to see someone play a NES game as proof of something (Like asking Not-Sure to play contra, ), then post and we'll organise times, etc.
Since VirtuaNes seems like a good program, I'll use that first to see if its good for netplay. VirtuaNes can be downloaded here at http://virtuanes.s1.xrea.com:8080/vnes_dl.php, its free to use.
Also, if anyone has found a place where people converge to play NES games over the net (other then Kaillera), then post and tell me plz.
Anyway, I guess if two people want to play, I guess they should PM their IP addresses to each other and organise a time if they are not online at the same time.
Also, if no one likes the idea then I apologize and kill the thread...

I'm down for a topic like this.
Also, fuck Contra 2-player. It sucks. You have to walk 2/3rds of the way over to scroll the screen, which gets you killed.

Ok, we can play that if you want. Are we going to us VirtuaNes, or something else. Do you want to host or me?

I'm up for multiplayer too, once I figure out how to work VirtuaNES to do that.

I thought about putting up a tutorial, but I havent used any of the netplay functions in these nes emulators before. But Im pretty sure of what to do though. With VirtuaNes, load a rom (which probably has to be exactly the same as the other person), then click File and then Netplay.
All the host does is click the type server (which it is by deafult) and then connect. The host is done. Then after that, Another person with the same rom goes to File --> Netplay, then clicks Type client, then types in the other persons Ip Address (probably with the port included) in the address bar. then they click connect. Then the client should connected to the host and then happy times...
Also you can type in nicknames.
Another thought about this thread, maybe we should set a time in a day or certain days where we're all online. Like a weekend or something. Anyway, what do you guys think.

That sounds like a good idea. With the weekly thing, it may be best to do it after the NES challenge is over since when we do play, it's likely only the game of that Challenge week

Well, if it's ok with Douche, Syd, and all maybe we can just have a topic where we put what game, what time, what day, etc. and maybe some IP addresses to meet up with people. ROM files might be tough since we need the same ROM file.
My IP currently is dynamic, so that might make it tough sometimes.

Sounds good. Not Sure and I tried to play contra using VirtuaNes and Nesticle. None of them worked, either because theres settings we might have to change on our routers/firewalls or the Netplay functions suck. I should set up a dedicated server just for NES games...

We managed to get this to work on Virtua NES, only with extreme lag.
We got to level 6 without power-ups using all our continues.

Jnes also has kaillera support, and is a very well developed emulator. It's easily my favorite NES emulator. Of course I haven't tried any others in about 3 or 4 years, so they may be better developed by now. Jnes' most recent release was earlier this year, I believe.
It's written by Jabo, the guy who handles the default graphics plugin for Project 64.
I've never used the kaillera feature though, because I've n.ever taken the trouble to find someone to play with/against me.

Smash TV is an awesome NES game for multiplayer. Because it's too hard without it, heh.
I'm definitely down for this. When I used to play with the neighbor kid online, I thought we used NESticle, but I may be completely wrong. And even if it was, I doubt it supports online play anymore, shit's old.

Im still up for multiplayer action, but right now I'm on holiday from university which means I am at my parents place. This means I have dial-up internet right now. In a few weeks I go back to my flat which has broadband, so then I'll play with someone on kaillera using Jnes to see what the speed is like on that. When Not Sure and I played contra using VirtuaNes the speed sucked donkey's ass.
Anyway dudes, dont be shy to ask someone for a game of NES multiplayer.
How fun would it be to watch someone play Castle of Dragon in real time.
PS: Also, if anyone successfully manages to have a game online tell us how it went and how the lag is. I'm trying to find the best emulator to use, etc.

I think a good first step would be to all say what coast we're on, so we can choose Kaillera servers accordingly. Just like, list your best pings to servers, as long as they're 70 and under.
My best servers:
West Wonderland - 16
DaRoms - 47
Aaaaaaaaand the rest are all 90!
