From http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=39693

"The Japanese animation company Production I.G. has acquired the rights from publisher Kodansha to sell the animated SF film Ghost in the Shell for a live-action remake, Variety reported.

Kodansha published the Ghost in the Shell manga by Masamune Shirow in 1989. Production I.G. then made it into a cult hit animated feature in 1995.

The animation company also produced the Ghost in the Shell feature follow-up Innocence and the animated TV series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, both of which have been widely distributed beyond Japan."

Innocence was so beautiful, it'd be a shame if they did a live action film instead of focusing on the animated/CG style. From a visual standpoint, improving upon Innocence would be way more fun to watch than a live action movie.

But I have enough confidence in Production IG, that if they do make a live action Ghost in the Shell movie, they'll do a good job.

I don't want to be a naysayer, but I'm siding with Jew. Come on...Who's gonna make it? You and I both know that they'll start with a great idea about just making the same movie in live action...then money will become involved and we'll get another "I, Robot".

They took the title, and certian plot points from 3 of the stories in that book, and heaped piles of shit upon it. Then they threw in the generic "Open the pod bay doors, HAL! I'm sorry, I can't do that" moment, and they were all "W3 pwn s0 fr1ck3n hard! W1ll Sm1th b3 haxx0rs lolololololololololol!!!!". Ugh, that movie was waaaaaay crappier than the book.

I think you need to remember the same people that did the anime are doing this live-action version.

That doesn't mean it'll be good. There's been plenty of times the original people went back to the well and screwed it up.

But I have no thoughts on it either way. The animes were fun, but I don't see a point in doing a live action version. I'll wait till I see a real trailer.

Anime into live action can be done pretty well. Try to track down a copy of "Casshern" on DVD.

I'll still stand by Aeon Flux. It was a flawed film and 25% of it was cut by the studio, but it was a much smarter movie than was advertised. There were also enough nods to the cartoon to satisfy me. I think it's all we can ask of "Ghost in the Shell" or something like "Transformers".

I've worked on a few adaptations and there's a lot that goes into bringing any source material to the screen. Animes are difficult, because things that work animated don't work in live action. Trying to recreate it with CG doesn't quite work out either. Other things are plots and stories to clean up or sometimes "improve". Most fans wonder why they muck around with the source material like that, but it is necessary. No one wants to see the exact same movie; that's what fan recreations are for. That remake of "Psycho" is almost unwatable because it's the exact same, aside from very minor changes.

I don't know what "Ghost in the Shell" is going to do, but I promise that they will change it. Look at "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" which was written by the novel's author. Adams changed it to make it more cinematic too.

the issue then becomes "what do we have to gain by making a live action adaption of an anime, besides money?" maybe if it doesn't work, like your saying, then they jsut shoudln't do it.

That's where the story changes come in. Aeon Flux had a different message than the show had, but in the same vain. "Hitchhiker" also had a different theme than the book/radio show had. Fight Club the book and Fight Club the movie, had the same story, but not quite the same tone nor message.

"Ghost in the Shell" could have its own unique reason for being made the way it is. There's much more you can say in all these different mediums. One story could have a million things to say, but it's in execution that determines what it's really about.

That's why we retell stories all the time - Not just remakes, mind you, but going back to the classic stories whether it be "Man vs. Himself" to "Man Loves Woman".

Yes, help Tebor track down a copy. Twisted Evil

Watching Sunshine reminded me of this film. Interest is piqued.

I don't understand a need to make anime to live action. A comic book sure. No reading, get to see your hero's in full 30fps action, makes sense. But anime is already animated and formated the same as a live action movie so what's the point? Ghost in the shell was great as an anime, the sky was the limit on what the characters could do, and for some reason corny dialogue and ridiculous costumes are more forgivable in cartoon format.
