Well despite being anti-handheld for so long, I finally broke down and bought a DS lite. I got Mario Kart DS and I'm leaning towards buying the FFIII remake as well. Other titles that I'll probably end up getting are New Super Mario Bros, Phantom Hourglass, and Dawn of Sorrow. Speaking of Dawn of Sorrow, is this game discontinued or something? Because Bestbuy and Gamestop seem to not even carry it in their inventories. Anyway, a lot of people on here seem to like the DS and I don't really know much about it, so I'm wondering what other games should be on my radar. No pokemon, please...

There are lots of good RPGs to get. Guitar Hero is coming out next week. And, forgot Final Fantasy III, wait for this:

I can't wait for Final Fantasy IV DS. Enjoyed it on the SNES, Playstation, and GBA, as well as the ROM translation back in '01.
By the way crookshow, another good DS games is Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

I would stray away from New Super Mario Bros. It's short and easy. Final Fanatasy Revenant Wings is pretty good, it's like FF meets StarCraft. I got both Castlevania's at EB/Gamestop like a month ago for $17.99, I need some good RPG's as well until College is back in session. 8 hours playing on this site gets boring without anyone on here.

Just get Portrait of Ruin. Soooo much better. And yes, get FF4 DS.
Bleach: The Blade of Fate - the best DS fighter period, and it's online (!!). The fight mechanics can be described as a mix of Guilty Gear and KoF. Here's a vid from the sequel (Dark Souls) coming out late summer to get you interested:
Note: This is from the Japanese version.
I even like the hyper Art of Fighting kinda thing where it zooms in and out of the action.
I can think of more later.

Neither of the Castlevania games seem to show up on Bestbuy and Gamestop's websites for some reason...
If FFIII is passable, then what are some good RPG's to get while I wait for FFIV?

Don't get Lunar: Dragon Song. I'm a fan of the Lunar series, but I played enough to where I traded the game in.

Bestbuy doesn't sell it new anymore and Gamestop's website is so broken I don't even know where to begin. There are boatloads of games that they sell that aren't on their site. Not to mention the Millions of typos and misnamed games. END RANT.

I honestly didn't think NSMB was much shorter than SMW, if it was shorter at all. And it wasn't that much easier.
If anyone was expecting a 2D handheld Mario game to be as long as one of the 3D ones they deserve to be disappointed.

Thats the problem! It shouldn't be on par with SMW, the DS is far superior to the SNES, the game could have been a lot better, all it was Super Mario Bros +. There's no real replay factor IMO, but then again that's why it's a platformer. I'm not saying it's a horrible game, but I wouldn't make it one of the first games I pick up if you want a game that will take time.

They could've done much more with it, I agree. But I don't know, I find myself replaying it fairly often either way.
It's obvious Nintendo wasn't going for something innovative with this one, more like just a throwback to the first SMB as you implied, but that was fine with me. I'm just glad we even got a new 2D Mario platformer at all; it seemed like Nintendo had given up on that in favor of 3D games and rehashing their old titles with irritating voice-overs (Mario Advance).
I did indeed have one complaint though. The new power-ups were extremely limited in their usage. Should've been more levels and secret exits and stuff where you needed to use them to make it to the finish. You spend the vast majority of the time with the fire flower.
To crookshow: it's fun, but don't expect it to be very ground-breaking if you get it. Think like what Douche said, Super Mario Bros. +, basically a game in the style of the original SMB, with aspects of 3, World, and 64 thrown in.

Yeah it took me like 6 hours or so to play through it and unlock everything, but I found myself going back and playing through it again and again.
I'm a Mario fanboy.
I also played through Mario 3 for the first time in months earlier today. It was great but holy shit the boss battles are even more retardedly easy than I remembered.

Try bouncing on the boss constantly w/o touching the floor or use fireballs it's a bit more challenging (of course I mean the airship/main boss). BoomBooms are fucking easy ass minibosses.

I'm so bananas I'm showing up to your open casket,
to fill it up with explosive gases,
and close it back,
with a lit match in it,
while I sit back, and just hope it catches.
Blow you to fragments,
laugh,
roll you, and smoke the ashes.

The Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice series, preferably in order if you can pull that off. There's always Pokemon too. I never played the Resident Evil game for the DS so no info there. Lastly, Advance Wars: Day of Ruin.

Planet Puzzle League is fun, as long as you don't mind a lack of good music and familiar characters.

Don't depend on Gamestop's website for stuff like that. They have Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin at the stores in my town.

Also, grab Advance Wars: Dual Strike. The game mechanics are kind of screwed up, but the story is much better than Days of Ruin. I just can't get into that game.
And WarioWare: Touched is good fun.

I loved Contra 4. The 1st and 3rd level's music is still stuck in my head. Laser sucks.
Phoenix Wright is amazing. If you wanna start on it, get the 1st one, then the 2nd one, and so on. If you start with a later game, you'll miss some story details that will really enhance the experience.
I liked Planet Puzzle League. It was trippy.
And sorry Char, Dual Strike felt like the same damn thing I played on the GBA =/ I thought Days of Ruin was the perfection of the series. I was sold on the music and online play (voice chatting during battle!!) alone. Also, those new units were really useful, like the flare.
What's also good is:
Meteos (damn good and original puzzle game)
Puyo Pop Fever (another good puzzle game, based on crazy ass combos. may be a little "sweet" for your taste though)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (nice Zelda-like, great graphics)
Mega Man ZX Advent (Megaman + metroidvania awesome)
Sonic Rush Adventure (A not shitty Sonic game)
Space Invaders Extreme (really..it is fucking CRAZY)
Luminous Arc (you into SRPGs?)
Front Mission (repeat above sentence)
FFTA2 (repeat sentence again)

Contra 4 is cool, the only thing that pisses me off is the flamethrower. I miss the old whip style one that you could flail around, the new one is just generic.

Do you guys think they will remake FF V and VI for DS after IV? I'm tempted to get the gba versions (they are my 2 favorite FF games), but if they're going to remake them eventually I'll hold out.

With Square Enix, you never now. I'd say go ahead and get the GBA versions for right now.
Oh, and Metroid Prime Pinball is a good game too.
