That's almost a Superman II and Superman Returns reference.

I honestly didn't expect that, because it seemed way too obvious. Still thought it was funny though.

Yeah, Superman Returns does suck -- I mean, wasn't the Poochie reference a reference to MASH?

No. McLean Stevenson's Henry Blake character had been written out of MASH at the end of the third season because Stevenson wanted to leave the show. Everyone knew he was leaving and the script called for him to be discharged. It was shocking that character died, but it was not the result of a studio doublecross. It was done because MASH always mixed comedy with melodrama and it wanted to drive home its anti-war message. War is hell, and there are a lot of unhappy ending in war. In reality, the script didn't effect the show in any significant way. There were never going to write Blake back into the show. All the script change did was prevent McLean Stevenson from appearing on the crappy spin-off series After MASH.

I was thinking about this over today and decided that killing a character on their way home is an inadvertent MASH reference.

How did Kirby die?
Will his story be retold via a CSI Miami episode?
