Final Guard? The highest level of the large armor enemies? The one that looks like a gold plated king? The one that you do 1 damage per attack to no matter what you use? The one that seems like it has 30,000 HP and NEVER seems to drop its soul, at least on my Dawn of Sorrow game? Yeah, that one is REALLY hard to get.

Dude, if you're only doing one damage to final guards, you need a better weapon, I use the Death Scythe in my game and do like 60 something to them. You're thinking of the Iron Golem maybe, him you only do one damage to per hit no matter what weapon. Final Guards are easy to beat, you just have to fly over them as the bat and land behind them, they can't turn around so you're free to wallop the shit out of them. Their souls aren't that hard to get, put more luck raising stuff on like the Three 7's and buy the soul collector ring.

Oh, yeah. Iron Golems are the ones that can shoot fire, right? Yeah, those are the ones I only do 1 damage to. So, souls are related to luck. My character doesn't have a high LUCK stat ( only 28 ), because I've been beefing up his strength. I'll take your advice.
What type of weapon is the Death Scythe? I use the Great Axe, and need the Final Guard soul to power it up.

Yeah, you're probably strong enough by now to put a bunch of stuff on that raises your luck and be ok. Get 9 Ghost Dancer souls and equip those, equip the Three 7s armor if you have it (Killer Clowns drop them if you don't) and the Soul Collector ring if you can afford it. If you can't, there's a soul, I forget which, that increases the chances of enemies dropping more gold. Use that, go to an area where zombies constantly spawn and go to town, they drop $500 sacks pretty frequently like that. Once you have all that stuff, it's pretty easy to get just about any soul.
The Death Scythe is the final upgrade of the axe, I think when you make the next level after Great Axe, it's Golden Axe and after that is Death Scythe. You need Death's soul to make the scythe though.

Super easy to get. I can make him have 1 hp.
Wanna know how?
You use the soul cape weapon. It switches their HP/MP.
One hit kill.
If you want, use Imp's soul to soften him up a bit. Lowers his max HP considerably.
If that doesn't work, two fully charged shots from Skull Archer Souls kill him.

I changed my mind about SOTN. I like it now. I realized you don't even have to go fight the stupid cheap armor guy with the bird. I followed the two sub-boss guys and beat their asses horribly with my bare hands. I just found some totally awesome sunglasses, and I'm pretty much hooked now.

All right, so I spent pretty much all day yesterday hooked up to my DS pcollecting money to buy the Soul Ring in Dawn of Sorrow. And then I went ahead and got 9 ghost dancer souls, and while it's certainly easier to get souls now, damn, I still spend a bunch of time just going in and out of rooms killing the same guy over and over. I spent well over an hour with all that business equipped just to get ONE Great Axe Armor soul. Something I'm doing wrong here or what?

Some souls can be a bitch to get. I think it just has something to do with the game's random numbers generator. It randomizes when you get things like souls and items from regular enemies.

Dawn of Sorrow is pretty awesome.
I also really enjoy Dracula's Curse and Simon's Quest. I'll also back Castlevania 64, just because I know no one else will show it any love. |
*Shows love*
Now that I've scratched your back, I demand recognition of Castlevania: Bloodlines.
Probably the best CV game that doesn't have a map screen.

NO MAP!!!???
Holy shit!
Also, the upcoming Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is a direct sequel to Bloodlines that stars John Morris' son Johnathan.
And this game has a map screen.

Souls actually have different percentages of rarity, beyond the star rating it displays in the monster's info, I think. Great Axe Armors are probably higher cause I only ever got one of their souls and it took a lot of running in and out of the room. Sometimes you just have to do that to get certain souls, I had to do the same for The Creature and Malacoda. Just think of all the extra experience you'll gain...
And the screenshots I've seen of Portrait of Ruin look sweet.

Aria of Sorrow was the last one I played and I enjoyed it immensely. The silver bullet handgun fucking owns.
So, uh, I hate to say this, but I hate Symphony of the Night. I know, I know, it's blasphemy. But seriously, I can't get into it. The GBA game looks like it has better graphics to me, the PSX game was blurry as shit. Also it was impossibly difficult, I couldn't even get past the knight with the bird outside the castle. Freaking IMPOSSIBLE. I tried that part so many times in a row until I finally just gave up on the game and deleted it.
Basically, playing Aria of Sorrow first ruined it for me. |
at the very beginning of th game?
you arent supposed ot fight that night till much later dude.
SOTN was my alltime favorite. richter speed trials 4 lyfe!

Castlevania DS, which has the soul system. A system so superior to subweapons and items that it makes them cry. The worst thing about it is the harvesting you end up doing. Having to kill "the creature" 100+ times is not good gameplay. (BTW, iron golems drop quickly if you use the imp soul and a low damage tick weapon, like the teddy bear or the kaiser knuckle.)
SOTN was cool, but not very difficult. One enemy dropped a sword that allowed me to kill normal enemies without stopping. Just walk forward with weapon slashing. Bosses died in 30 seconds or less.
Castlevania 1 and 3 captured my heart, simons quest wasnt my style at 8 years of age.
Two more things. First, you dont get to play as the equivalent of grant denasty in castlevania DS. Only Julias, Yoko Belnades, and Alucard are available. People messing around with the memory found unused sprites for Hammer, the merchant. But no such luck.
Second, kogi igarashi is forbidden from writing stories and characters, because whoever has been pumping out that lame dialogue will suffer in hell. Kogi is also not allowed to put terrible saturday morning anime intros into further games.

my first castlevania was simon's quest on NES. I got it when I was eight. after that I had castlevania III, which I liked considerably more, then I played the original, which sucked in comaprison to III.
super castlevania IV was also pretty fun, but dracula X was better IMO. I know it pales in comparison to rondo of blood, but I don't have a zillion dollars to spend on one game.
the gameboy games all sucked except for the one with sophia, and I liked the GBA games that I've played. circle of moon was alright, although a tad tedious, and the one after that was alot of fun.
I don't like the newer 3d castlevania games much. I don't know why, and lets not even mention the N64 ones.
also, fuck the soul system.

Yea I got that sword a few times also. It's got a Japanese name......a Yamakuza sword or something. For all the other weapons, Alucard has to stop and plant his feet to swing, but with this one you merely see a circular pattern as he swings it too fast for the eye to see.
I agree that in spite of its coolness, it was ridiculously overpowered. Although while using it your defense was sapped to zero.....but then, with this sword, it didn't matter.

He may be referring to the Crissaegrim, which was better because it wasn't a two-hander. I beat Dracula's final form in 8 seconds with that thing XD.
