http://www.destructoid.com/egm-refuses-to-review-metal-gear-solid-4-88651.phtml
"Rather than crook the knee to Konami, EGM has actually refused to review Metal Gear Solid 4 thanks to Konami's demands that nobody mention the game's alleged large install sizes and cutscenes. While IGN is perfectly fine with bowing to Konami, EGM has at least shown that its reviewers can't be pushed around so easily. The magazine has instead compromised with a roundtable discussion of the game as opposed to a full review."

I think that's BS. When companies start placing blackmail requests on publishers, telling them what they can and can't say in a review, then the whole market of Game Review Media becomes worthless.
Just like the guy that got fired because he gave Kane & Lynch a (Much Deserved) bad review, and they just so happened to be a sponser.
If this trend keeps up, I just quit reading reviews from the big boys and rely on Blogs and Youtube. (Which I do most of the time anyway.)

When did developers start turning into dicks and, by extension, dictators? I know how Nintendo used to control things with an iron power glove but I thought the days of shit like that were over for the most part.
It’ll be interesting to see how EGM’s roundtable turns out seeing as it’s just going to be the equivalent of printing a message board discussion but with less “OMGZ, dat gaymz ghey” or, perhaps, more.

Well, its different when Nintendo controlled what came out on Nintendo Power.
But this is BS. Meh, I'm not going to pay for a PS3 anyways. I am not a huge fan of free advertisement, though I will give credit that for the most part Game Informer magazine tells it how it is.
Could we be talking a bomb with this game? Well, I'll have to take your guy's words for it.

Nah, it won't be a bomb. It'll be a best-seller on name-recognition alone. Konami's obviously spooked about the cutscenes, maybe the testing groups brought it up a lot. Thing is, the PS3 and its fans are always looking for a solid exclusive title, and I doubt the game will be low quality (If they make it more like MGS3 instead of 2). Anyone who's played an MGS game probably knows what they're getting into anyway.

The required install is 4.5 gigs. I actually wouldn't mind if more games did this, if it meant less load times. Konami is being pretty damn gay about all this though.

Oh no, not an install!!!!!!
Boo f'ing hoo!
You know you can replace your PS3 hard drive yourself right?
Just go buy any 2.5" SATA2 300 hard drive and slap it in.
In fact you could probably reduce load times by replacing the factory 5400RPM drive with a 7200RPM dirve.
Just go buy a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 ST9200420AS 200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive for a $130, and your set.

If I didn't already send my PS3 back to be fixed I would, but I definitly don't want to break the warranty seal.

Well, thanks to that video, I'm about 65-70% interested in hard news. Nice lightning effects on it.
Good lord, Knyte, I've never seen so many capital letters and numbers in a blog before.
I've only ever played MGS2 Substance before, and it was a good game overall. I just wish Raiden hadn't been such a whiny Tidus half the time. Not to mention the game can drill in plot holes whenever the fuck it wants, and it seems to work most of the time. Still, Raiden never met the Colonel before the mission? What the fuck? Good voice actors, though.

In general, I don't have an issue with installations being needed. The issue that's come up so far, though, is that games that come out on both PS3 and 360 run identically, but require the installation on the PS3 only. It's less about creating a better experience comparatively and more about compensating for Blu-Ray's slower load times. DMC4 is an example.
That being said, as straight up hardware, I prefer the PS3. It seems to be less prone to complete system failure, the hard drives are upgradeable without paying an insane sum, wireless is built in, and I still say it's the best (and cheapest) BD player on the market. Also, if you have the original model, having full ps2/ps1 compatibility is awesome.

Well I would rather complain about installation times than long loading times but then again I dont have a ps3 so the point is moot.

I've been reading that even if people install games onto their PS3, the loading times tend to still be either around the same/longer than 360 versions. I fear this is a incorrect generalization, so I'm open to anyone proving me wrong.
On the subject, I'm honestly looking forward to the review, just to see someone test something different. I'm getting kind of sick or reading the same format of review (graphics, sound, story, etc. then random number score). It's kind of why I now only make my decisions based on previews leading up to the game (I've gotten good at predicting a game's qualities), trying available demos, and watching Zero Punctuation (mainly because Yahtzee reviews on his own time and will be truly honest about a game's flaws).

I imagine publisher restrictions like the ones Konami requested are fairly common, and EGM has probably agreed to worse things in the past. I think they saw an opportunity to gain fan credibility at Konami's expense and took it. Don't fall for their hypocritical self-righteousness. |

I don't go for reviews. the only way that I judge a game is by what people who have bought it and played it have to say.

I usually know whether or not I'm going to buy a game before the reviews come out. I look at the average scores for confirmation, but will rarely read full reviews. If I see it's getting lower scores than I expected, that would set off a red flag and make me investigate further. The professional reviews are definitely harder to trust when shady shit like this topic exists. Gamespot's Kane & Abel situation and everyone and their mothers giving GTA IV a perfect 10 also come to mind. I feel like I trust the user reviews on Youtube a lot more.

Just how long are these infamous installation times on PS3 anyway? I mean if it's a couple of minutes, or even an hour or more, it seems like a silly thing to complain about if you only have to do it once. I mean sure, I'd rather NOT have to wait, but is it really that big of a deal?
I've got Xbox360, BTW

I don't know that the issue is about how long the installation takes. If you have a 40gb harddrive and a game takes up 4.5gb of that, that is over a 1/10 of your harddrive space. If games keep doing that you'll have to eventually delete games off of your harddrive so you can play new ones, or go out and buy another harddrive.
