As a fan of the Castlevania series, I gotta say I'm somewhat looking forward to this one. I have to admit however, that the series got quite tiring after Symphony, what with the same formula being repeated over and over again with mucked-up story lines and generic characters. I suspect this one will be another metroidvania, but with the promise of co-op game play, it's already got me interested.

On a secondary note, while I remain ambivalent towards the silly story lines of the post-Symphony games, that's not to say I didn't enjoy them. And the PS2 games... Lament of Innocence went above and beyond absurdity, fucking alchemy nonsense. Curse of Darkness was a far better game, but fuck... Trevor gets stabbed in the back, kissed by a man, and promptly forgotten for the rest of the game... Goddamn it.
Oh well, you can always look forward to Warren Ellis' Castlevania 3 animated film.

I really enjoyed Lament despite the obnoxious anticipation of altering your weapon and the reality of wasting time to get something that is a stupid piece of crap (baseball bat wtf?!), and the end battle with that giant satan guy is a dirty rotten sonofabitch, however level grinding theough he tower of eternitiy was fun for some odd reason.

First off, you guys have Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness switched; Curse of Darkness was the one with the alchemy/weapon creation system. Lament of Innocence was really pretty to look at and fun to play, but short, even with the two secret characters (though Joachim was friggin' awesome.) Curse of Darkness was pretty cool as well, especially since I'm the kinda guy who likes fighting the same enemies over and over to get items I need to forge new stuff.
And this new game looks and sounds as good as the last two. I really like the DS games so far as well as the GBA ones, though Harmony of Dissonance was kinda weak.

I'm really glad they got rid of the anime shit. I hope this one has a good story to it. It's like they try to avoid signifcant storylines just to keep the series going. I was really hoping this one would have something to do with 1999 or the female main character would be a Belmont.

I've been a fan of Castlevania for a long time (even though I haven't played that many of the games).
Lament was a fun game. The graphics were fantastic, and I enjoyed the fighting action, although the real-time item selection was a pain in the ass. I even thought the voice acting was pretty solid, though others seem to disagree. Leon Belmont was a pretty cool character.
The biggest problem, as so many have said, was the repetitiveness and overall shortness of the game. Also, the camera was a motherfucker to deal with sometimes.
It saddens me, because Castlevania SHOULD be one of the heavy hitters in the videogame world. There's so much untapped potential with this subject matter. I hope they can pull it off this time.

Can't wait. It sounds like it's got English voice acting, too, so that's a plus (for me, at least).

Ah, I probably should have clarified myself. I was referring to the fact that in Lament of Innocence, the power of Vampire Killer whip stems from alchemy/Leon's dead wife... as opposed to, durrr I dunno, holy power? a divine gift? I despised the whole Matthias = Vlad Tepes/Dracula thing as well. The problem with both of the PS2 games was that they were so repetitive, and had little to no variation in terms of background textures. I always felt I was wading through the exact same location, with Dracula's castle in Curse of Darkness being the worst offender.
This new game looks good, but really fucking similar to all the other Metroidvanias. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is getting rather tiring. If the 2-player coop thing is true, then I'll definitely pick it up. On another note, I hate how Igarashi has handled/handles the time line/storyline of Castlevania, I mean Bram Stoker's Dracula was integrated into it? Seriously? Quincy Morris had a son? Ehhh whatever I suppose.
Not to be a nostalgiafag, but it would be really nice to see a new, fully-fleshed 2d action Castlevania on the DS, reminiscent of the first 4 Castlevania games. It could be in the same vein of the Contra revival with Contra 4, bringing back Simon to whup some ass.
Ah well.

Yeah, but nobody really considers Bloodlines canon, so no ties to Stoker's Dracula.

I've always found it a little weird that they integrated Bram Stoker's Dracula into the Castlevania storyline (or so they say), as well... it's just kind of strange from a gaming/literary standpoint. Usually a game series doesn't just absorb a classical novel into its timeline. That's like Half-Life 2 saying "Oh, by the way, have you read 1984? While you were in stasis, that happened, and also O'Brien is Combine."
If Bloodlines isn't canon, then by extension Portrait of Ruin isn't canon either, since it stars Quincy Morris's grandson. Unless they retconned it and said "Eh, John Morris's father is someone else".
Ugh. See how confusing this gets? I just play the games that get thrown at me and accept it. The Metroidvania formula is, I admit, getting a little tired, but I have fun with it anyway. Although... the idea of a fully remade old-style Castlevania game would be pretty cool. I wanna see Simon Belmont again, and not just in his old sprites.

Didn't that big preorder package for the last DS Castlevania come with a timeline for all the games?

I never really tried to piece the games together chronologically.
after "Dracula's a dick and your player wants him dead" all storyline ends for me, except for what the game tells me.
oh yeah, this is from an old THI article:
Quote: |
Dracula is an interesting exception to the list here. I don’t know WHAT he did that was so bad, but his son wants him dead in a serious way. Personally I don’t see what’s so wrong about murdering peasants, destroying villages, and casting a plague to wreak havok across the countryside. Whatever his deal is, Alucard has some serious shit to settle with is dad and he’s ready to throw it down. In fact, Alucard is so dedicated to viciously murdering his own father that he stormed into his castle and slaughtered hundreds of skeletons and god only knows what else before just saying “fuck it,” destroying the entire castle, destroying the entire castle upside down, killing the guy that could ressurrect his dad, and then outright serving Count Dracula a heaping plate of doom. After that he did a few book singnings, went on Leno, and put himself into an eternal slumber. |

I just read about the some of the changes in Order of Ecclesia, and it sounds pretty awesome. Keeping track of your MP sounds a little annoying in the begining, but I think the Glyph systems won't hinder the game at all. I like the idea of of traveling to different areas in transylvanian via a world map, and the character art looks amazing. Hopefully there will be an option to play as Albus after beating the game, nothing against the new girl, but I want to use shotguns.
