Hi!
I've owned once a NES system, but I've lost it, with all my games. I'm now trying to recreate my collection once more, and it's quite easy with popular, mainstream games, but one title gives me a headache. It was labeled "Mario 13", but it was surely just a "hack", as it has nothing to do with a real mario, except a main character.
All texts were in Japaneese. The main character was Mario (looked like from SMB3) with a stick, which used it for fighting the enemies. There was ~8 levels, which could be played in random order, each ending with a boss. After defeating the boss, an upgrade to Mario's stick was applied. One boss gave an ability to rotate the stick, others to spit fire and poison from it, throw the stick, or fly. After completing all levels, Mario is "sucked" into "heaven", where he jumps in the middle of clouds, fighting with miniature versions of bosses, and clearing his way to final boss, which looks like a big shadow (only the outline is visible).
If anyone (dispite my chaotic description) has even a trace of idea what was the real name of this game, please let me know.
Thanks a lot!

That sounds alot like Saiyuuki World 2: Tenjoukai no Majin.

The game was reworked into Whomp 'Em and released in the US.

Well, Saiyuuki is the title of the Japanese translation of Journey To The West, the legend on which characters such as DBZ's Goku are based.
Majin I believe is Magic, and I don't know what the rest means.

Close, "majin" is actually a word appropriate for any magical or demonic beings like genies and demons.
My attempt at the translation comes out as:
"Journey to the West World 2: Demon's Celestial World"

You people may think I'm crazy, but I think I have not only seen a picture of "Super Mario 13" on eBay, but also a copy of a game called "Super Bros. 4" as well as "McMario."
However, I may have to look for these images.
Edit:
If you look in the middle, you can see "Super Bros. 6" and "Super Wonderful Mario" which may or may not prove that the games I mentioned in my original post exist, or at least existed at one point.
Now look at the middle of the top row. Has anybody heard of "Super Bros. 8?"

I got the picutres from here. I apologize for the long URL though.

You're not crazy. However, the games you're talking about are bootleg carts. Often "companies" would create cartridges with multiple games in one. Frequently they'd put the same games on there multiple times, changing tiny things like starting the game on a different level. Hence all the "Super Mario Bros. 8-1000000".
Sometimes, though, it'd be even better. These bootleg companies would actually create unauthorized ports of popular games for systems like the Famicom. Thus you'd actually get 8-bit versions of Mortal Kombat I & II, and Street Fighter II. Some are terrible, and some are completely terrible.
But if you have a Famicom emulator, it's worth hunting down the ROMs just for curiosity's sake.

Wasn't there a bootleg SNES MK that had like 100 characters?

I know there was an NES one that did. In fact, several. However, they didn't really. They were the same handful of characters copied over and over again with different colors and [sometimes] different names.
On the plus side, though, certain MK/MKII bootleg carts allowed you to play as Goro, old Shang Tsung, Kintaro, and Shao Khan.
But none of this is worth drooling over, because these are some of the worst games ever. Since they weren't official ports, there was no quality standard at all, so they cut lots of corners. For example, Scorpion doesn't use a harpoon spear -- he throws a fireball. A lot of moves were cut or replaced, and I don't think any of them have fatalities.

Someone was working on an Open Source MK game for DOS and Windows. It had 18 characters with an option to make your own.

Well, can you show me a link to do that? The only site with such games that I could find was ROMNation, and I can't download the bootleg Mario games.
Anyway, it was interesting to see a bootleg of Street Fighter II for the famicom.

I'd say Google is your best bet, honestly. I'm sure they're out there if you search.
