If this was discussed already, post the link and I'll merge.

I've been pissing people off left and right about Mass Effect and its SecuRom. I don't think it's a big deal but the nerds on at least three other websites think it is. I just recently posted on GameFaqs how much of a nonissue it really is.

Anyway, I trust the thoughts and opinions of the people on this board more than any other board of complainers. I know many of you are gamers and I hope you're not all cynical and paranoid in thinking big business is out to get you.

Are you really worried about DRM securities on PC games? And why?

Limited activations (3)
You must be connected online for a first time activation.
It allegedly installs a rootkit on your computer -- This is not confirmed because few people have actually played it.

Limited activations is kind of gay, but that should be solved by a call to tech support, as with the "need to be online" install.

The rootkit thing is stupid if it's true. If not, than whoever got that info from you is paranoid.

DRM on music CDs and mp3s is certainly troubling and obnoxious. On a game, not so much.

Actually, I could see DRM causing a problem for me. Let's say that 20 years from now I decided to do a retro review the PC version of Mass Effect. So I buy a sealed copy of the game off of eBay and go to install it. Unfortunately, the authenication server no longer exists so I can't activate the game, thus rendering it unplayable.

Also, limited activations limits your ability to resell a game that you've grown bored with.

Actually, it would be better for the game to link to the internet AFTER you installed it, to see if your code is valid.

Actually, I think that's it.

And considering that GameTap and Steam are successful, it is not hard to believe that in 20 years a more easily accessible version of Mass Effect PC will be available. Don't look at it like I'm buying the same game twice, because with years difference it isn't so bad. I bought Face/Off on VHS, then I bought the DVD, then I bought the 2 disc special edition DVD. About 10 years went into that. My funds replenished and I don't feel bad at all spending that money.

GameTap has both Deus Ex games on it. I have DE for the Mac and IW for the PC. I don't consider that a rip off either, because the new Macs can't play the old DE anyway! The OS 9 emulator screws up the game a bit. Don't think that's a big deal, the same is true for the early LucasArts games. Not to mention The X-Files game which won't run well on OSX or Windows Vista. To me, it's like trying to play an 8 track on an iPod, technology wears out.

Now L33Ts don't seem to realize that and they complain about a future they may not even live to see. They could suffer a fatal heart attack in five years or the US becomes a 3rd world country in 10. Worrying so far ahead of time is pointless. We should only be worrying about social security, oil, and global warming! Bleating and Babbling

Back to the activations, it is 3 computers. You can uninstall on a computer and reinstall without it taking off an activation. Again, their customer service will activate it for you if you can prove you actually own the game - say email a digital picture of you and the game to them. To me that's reasonable.

The root kit is definitely blown out of proportion. The kids on GameFAQs and Amazon believe it is SkyNet and can do anything to you. Not true. Root kits only follow like three protocols. Their actions are limited. Some of it might be to send your IP address back to the mother ship, but that is hardly an invasion of privacy. It isn't going to send a list back to EA of all the porn you have on your computer, nor would EA care if you did. Again, it is like Echelon recording my phone calls - I DON'T CARE! I never have an incriminating phone call because all I talk about is either: getting work, bitching about pop culture, or getting laid. The government doesn't give a shit about what I think about "Clue" and I don't care that they're listening to me.

I can't understand why these nerds take it so personally. I can only imagine it is because they have a ton of pirated shit on their computer and no lawyers. Again, EA is not going to rat you out to the FBI, nor would I think the FBI would arrest you. It seems computer piracy is not "in" at the moment the way it was a few years ago. Now, there's talk that the game won't run if you have certain pirate software... I don't know if that's true as there's been no confirmation of it yet.

Anyway, I get the game in theory tomorrow. I'll be backing up my computer just in case, because you can never be too safe. However, I have serious doubts that Mass Effect PC is the end of our civil liberties.

I just find it annoying and useless. People will always find a way around copy protection, so its existence in the first place is fucking pointless.

I buy any games that I enjoy, period. I'm sorry the world is full of worthless assholes who have no morality, but I shouldn't have to install anything I don't want on my computer to enjoy a game, regardless of what it is. I'd just sooner play it on the 360 or something if I was that desperate.

Just throw the word bomb and president randomly into every conversation, try to make cool new slang words out of them.

Again, the nerds on Amazon blew something out of proportion like Y2K. DRM IS A LIE!
