It figures. Does Konami still do the franchise?
I thought the cutscenes in Final Fantasy XII ruined the game, I stopped playing because I was tired of hearing Vaan's gay ass speak.

I'm not really surprised. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 were the same way and it was just as irritating. I love how some of the comments on that page are like "Bring it, I expect nothing less!" You have to be a really hardcore fan in order to shrug off cutscenes longer than the game itself. Maybe they noticed they could skip them and decided to just do that.

Hey guys.
You shut up okay. I don't care if I'm not playing the video game alright, I wanna hear a good story about honor and war and people dying and smoking, alright?
You think you're too good for MGS4? You shut up alright.

................anyway
this isnt too suprising. but the way they are progressing is pretty disappointing. nothing can be worse than xenosaga though. hopefully there will be a cut the scene option. although on some of the rereleases they pretty much took all cut scenes and turned them into 1 weird movie.

yeah, 90 minute cut scenes is a little too much imo. i understand the whole philosophy of trying to show us a great story and great writing and bla bla bla, but fuck the 90 minute bullshit. might as well make a DVD miniseries instead

I'm sorry, but Uwe Boll makes longer movies than that, so fuck you and your opinions Syd.
Whine all you want about cut scenes but they are the reason why Metal Gear is better than 95% of all other games. It makes it about the experience not some bullshit repetition or grinding. Gameplay is usually overrated*. Too much gameplay and the game gets repetitious. Like playing a GTA game for over an hour or two straight gets very monotonous.
I'd rather play a game that actually affects me emotionally then gets me pushing buttons for long periods of time. Boring!
*And now I feel like a five year old. Grain of salt, grain of salt...

LOL, Tebor.
Seriously though, I would like a good story in a game and some good character development. But I don't think there's any reason that any non-prologue, non-epilogue cutscene should be longer than 10-15 minutes. You yourself conceded said at one point that Kojima should just make a movie already.
But hell, maybe I'm wrong. Solid Snake is awesome enough that I'm sure many people would gladly sit through a 24 hour cutscene if they had to.

Gameplay is overrated? GAMEPLAY IS OVERRATED! In a fucking GAME!!!
If I wanted to watch someone named Snake do shit while I couldn't affect the plot for 90 minutes, I'd watch Escape from New York.

I like having a good story in any game, but some game companies go a little too far. The Half Life story kicks the almighty hell out of the Metal Gear games, and between the four installments of you playing as Gordon Freeman, there's less than fifteen minutes of cutscenes, and the game never leaves the eyes of the player.
I hated MGS2 because all I did was run down a hallway, shoot a guy with a tranq dart, go to a 15-minute cutscene, save my game/listen to a 15-minute conversation, walk down a hallway, shoot a dart.... repeat for 20 hours till the game's over. Meanwhile, I get to see cool gun battles with my character diving around explosions and bullets, but then I just go to a scene where I shoot a gun till it's out of ammo (which is very quick, and you can only do it in boss fights unless you want every soldier up your ass because of the gunshot sounds) then go back to shooting darts.
I'm fine with cutscenes, but consider this:
"Oh man, remember in Half Life 2 where you had to fight through Ravenholme with no ammo, and got to cut up zombies with propellers, squish them with cars, and throw sawblades at them?
"Yeah, that was righteous. It was almost as cool as when you had to fight those giant spiders with sticky bombs and a Road-Warrior-looking-Charger."
"Fuckin A."
Versus:
"Remember when we got to watch Ocelot kill like three guards at the same time with a six-shooter?"
"Yeah, it beat having to listen to Raiden whine about his girlfriend while shooting tranquilizer darts, and making him swim with a girl on his back."
"Uh-huh."
I heard MGS3 was different, but the fact that MGS2 spawned an era where games were basically just CDi games with better graphics just makes me mad.

I prefer when they use interactivity in their storytelling, like in a lot of FPS games where during a cutscene you are encouraged to use the right sltick to look around and view your surroundings, or like in RE4 and shenmue where you still have to worry about ATB events.

Oooooo, I really have to disagree. While Half-Life is entertaining and a good sci-fi pulp series, it doesn't nearly have the twists nor involvement of MGS. While their characters are also good, MGS has managed to balance many more characters who are more engaging and interesting. Aside from MGS3's bosses of course. <.<
Of course, debating a good franchise with another is like debating Silent Hill and Resident Evil.

The Half Life story |
What story was it exactly that you were referring to here, the invented one that is in no way actually in the game, that the collective unconscious of assuming retards created in their minds? Or did you mean the shoehorned bullshit that takes place some time during the rail shooter where you bounce around physics objects in bland levels?
Oh, hey, Gordon, remember this additional character that was in no way involved in the story?

Anyone who raves about the half life story is a complete idiot.
Gordon is not a good character. Gordon is not a character. Why bother giving a character with no lines a name.
Don't let gabe newell spew this bullshit through his pizza breath about how gordon is such a deep character and the game is so much better because he never talks. NO.
They should've just did what F.E.A.R did. Instead we have GORDON FREEMAN, A MAN WITH A PHD AND NOTHING WORTHWHILE TO SAY. Dumb.

You can count me on the Half-Life side of this argument. I think a lot of people can't understand that a story is being told in Half-Life because there aren't any cut-scenes. It actually tells you the story like, you know, while you're playing the goddamn game. Which is much, much preferable to stopping the game, taking you out of the story, and opening up Snake's Storybook and reading it to you like you're a retard for 30 minutes at a time.
And don't give me the "but he doesn't speak" bullshit, because the point is that you're Gordon Freeman. It's the whole reason the game goes to such lengths to almost always remain in first person. So you can experience the game yourself, rather than impose Mr. Cigarette Smokin' Gruff CoolGuy's personality on you.
Story-Wise, comparing Half-Life to MGS is like comparing Hamlet to fucking Looney Toons.

Yeah except instead of imposing cool cigarette smoking tough guys on you, they're imposing intentionally vague, "ominous" bullshit characters who have no background that you're supposed to immediately respect and understand the importance of, despite them having little to no background in the series. Most if not all characters in the entire game of Half-Life 2 are either completely inaccurate caricatures of their former selves, or have been entirely invented from nothing, with the game insisting upon itself that they've had previous contact with the player. Both methods of character interaction are forced, annoying, and add nothing to the story.

Yeah.
Because you really are IN the game, interacting with the characters. Having people talk to me like I'm a baby with one-sided dialogue really gives me that feeling.
The correct way to make a character is to make an "everyman" that people can relate to and empathize with.
Instead, you get a crash test dummy who can take orders, and hints at the occasional crush Alyx has on you.
Oh gordon, you're so fucking interesting. Unless you talk to your computer screen and respond to the dialogue, you know what you've said is bullshit.
But if you DO happen to do that, you're a creepy loser.

"Don't forget to reload Mr.Freeman!"
After I've fired a total of TWO shots from my SMG, while enemies are still staring me in the face. Thanks, NPC's, you guys are really drawing me into the deep story.
At least MGS has some fucking emotional involvement. I don't mind cutscenes, they give you a break from the game. You don't "play" the fucking story in any game worth its salt. Okay, maybe in Fallout. But even then, so much of the story is dialogue driven, it's not about doing an aimed shot to a guy's eyes or something. That's why Half-Life 2 has no fucking story and the game is essentially a meaningless, linear series of scripted events that you're forcefully shoved through.

The whole point of mgs is to be covert. what did you think when you started? it would be non stop run and gun?
This is as fucking stupid as saying
